Can't find Artifacts in Modern Era
I bought an explorer and had him go to a University to find an artifact. But I don't see any symbol on the map that denotes where he has to dig for an artifact. What am I supposed to be looking for?

You need to send your explorer into a university/museum that you or another nation has built.
When you have the explorer selected, look for the symbol of a jar+magnifying glass.
That will let your explorer "study" the continent the university/museum is on, and only THEN will the artifacts appear, but only on that continent!

Further to DadouXII's answer, after researching at a museum/university then a shovel icon will appear on the map indicating where to dig. Send your explorer to this site select the shovel (dig) symbol in the explorer options.

To add to this it can only be done once so if you or another civ has already explored then it’s not possible to do it again

So I did that. I sent my explorer to a University, had him study, and... the map looked the same. I still had the icons for him to study at other Universities on the continent, but I didn't see any other icon appear (the "shovel" that skylark mentioned didn't appear).

I'm pretty confident none of the AI beat me to it. The Modern era just started, I have a near monopoly on this continent, I have WAY more culture than anyone else, and I blitzed Natural History (or whatever the Civic is called). Maybe it was a glitch? I'll reload an earlier autosave and see if anything's different.

EDIT: Nope. Still no shovel icon. There were a couple of islands within the continent that I didn't have full vision on so I got open borders and went to explore. Still nothing. No shovel icon at all. I guess it's possible that while I was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around trying to get troops down there the AI scooped it up, but it still feels unlikely. I had vision on like 95% of the continent, I'm confident I got the civic and the Explorer first, so it feels very unlikely that it just happened to spawn on one of the tiles I couldn't see and the AI grabbed it that fast.
