What does fighter sweep do?

Title says it all. I tried using it but it doesn't seem to do anything? I just see an animation of my fighter shooting the ground, and idk if it actually does anything. I need some clarifications on this. Like does it affect the tiles surrounding it, does it prevent fighters from attacking my bombers, etc. Any help would be nice thanks.

Yeah, it should cause opposing fighters to waste their interception and let your bombers fly through, provided there's no other interception that can happen. If there's no interception, the sweep doesn't really do anything.

You may actually be better off launching a ground attack plane and see what happens, unless you're certain the opposition is ready to intercept your planes.
