what is exact trigger and mechanic for an age transition?
The age transitions are a big problem in Civ 7, but that has been discussed in other threads. I am trying to understand the exact game mechanic that leads to an age transition. I thought it was when an AI or you finishes a legacy path, but upon a second playthrough, I finished 2 legacy paths and an age transition still did not start. Additionally, sometimes the time counter goes from 80% to 98% rapidly. So what is the exact trigger for an age transition?

The age progresses when anyone gains Legacy points. So if you rush and get to the end very quickly, you still have to wait for the other players to do stuff. That's also why the progress can jump forward. It means that multiple players finished objectives on the same turn.
Each turn equals 1 age progression point. In the legacy paths you can also see what each milestone equals in age progression points. As more players reaches more milestones the age progression can go quite rapid towards the end.

Age progression points needed to end the age I think depends on the age length you set in the settings.
i've seen it go from 58% to next era in 3 or 4 turns in a marathon game with longer ages. not sure what the first jump from 58-78 was but but a turn or two later i got notified that 'unknown player has been eliminated' (he was on the other continent i couldn't see yet) and it jumped to 100.

another era i was watching that timer tick 1% per turn and at 98% i declared war, thinking it'll last maybe 2 turns. Nope! Timer stopped moving and i got about 20 turns of war in before that age ended
I got this from another discussion:

Max age points seems to be 200 on standard speed / standard age length. Game speed scales it by 50/66/100/150/300%, while age length by 80/100/120%.

A few things seem to increment current age points:

  • Current turn (doesn't seem to scale w/ anything)
  • Legacy path milestones w/bonus for first civ reaching (scales with game speed)
  • Eliminating civs (scales with map size & maybe game speed?)
  • Future techs/civics (scales with game speed)
At standard speed, the passing of every 2 turns will make 1 percentage point of age completion pass. At online speed it's one for one, on turn #10, you should be at 10%.

Add to that base progression, the percentage points listed on the legacy paths for achieving each milestone. If it says you get 10 points for achieving a given milestone, that would make 70% age progression tick over to 80% instantaneously.

The points earned by all civs contribute. If you and two other civs all three get a milestone on the same turn that adds 10% to the initial 70%, that's 30% total, and the age will tick over to 100% the next turn, give you the end age notification, and the age will actually end the turn after that. The game always seems to give you one turn at the end of the age, to put your affairs in order,or something.

I have only ever played on standard speed and with the default 6 civs. I would think they might scale the size of the milestone kickers based on at least number of civs in the game, and maybe game speed as well, but I can't say from experience.

Also, in one of my five games, I noticed a small bump in the age progression very early in the age, before it seemed possible that any of the other civs could possibly have gotten a milestone. This was either some bug, or there are factors out there I don't know about that affect age progression.
