I'm pissed!!! WTF - why are you copying an indie game?
Steam was presenting me new games today and it gave me one that was built in 2022 that looks almost identical to the system you're using on this "New" Civ7. I'd like this community and Sid Meier himself to talk about that. I feel like we've been deceived. Why would you ant us to follow new methods of going through "ages" if you weren't just copying another game... I pre-paid and then get shown this game that looks and feels almost identical to your new previews. Even the animations. Ugh! I'm so disgusted right now - my beloved franchise of Civ seems to have spoiled off and copied instead of innovating... I know the forums don't like us posting about another company but this is it... this is the one. I have played Civ since the first version. I am not affiliaited with this game - I was just shown it and I'm not buying it - you can have steam tell you I didn't but the videos... from 2022!!!!!!! WTF

The 4x genre has some fairly established mechanics, like left-click-right-click for select-action. For entity trees (like the tech tree). For many things in fact. It is only natural for all games of this type, to feel and look similar in some of their parts. Civ-Humankind-Millennia-OldWorld all have hex tiles. Civ-Humankind-Millennia-OldWorld all have entity trees. Civ-Humankind-Millennia-OldWorld all have art style depicting Earth. Each game also "copies" (to use your word) mechanics from each other. But, all of those games also have their own unique mechanics, or unique versions of existing mechanics.

And to clarify something, Old World only has one "Age". It strictly sticks to the Classical Antiquity Age. Think Akkadian Babylonia and Egyptian Old Kingdom, through to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

I... didn't expect that the game in question would be the one linked, I must admit.

Just in the list of discussions there are for this game nine pages for Old World. Many devs are thinking about their next game the day after the last one was released. Let say they started to work on civ vii the end of 2016 or early 2017. I don't know if they had the idea for ages back then or not but if they did are they expected to throw away all their work because someone else released a game with it first? And if they did copy it they managed to do it in two years? Why do they wait six years to make a game and then do it in two? Because they wait years until they find a mechanic they like and steal it? lol.

I really don't get what's your point here? It's two different games. What is "copied" from your understanding? Or do you mix up Old World with Humankind, as long as you write: "going threw ages" ? At least Old World stays in one age, "only".

I liked Old World, but not enough to play it for more than 50 hours.

Upon release, aside from the hexes, it didn't remind me of Civ VI at all. The gameplay mechanics were completely different, and a bit strange.

I liked the art style.

As far as being a copycat of Civilization VII goes, that's a big no from me. Not even close.

Not many people have played Old World. It wasn't a popular game.

There are about 800 people playing Old World today, while 67,000 people are still playing Civ VI.

There is a reason for that.

50 hours is nothing for to experience a good 4x game. Anyway, I read enough of your posts, to know what kind of "gamer" you are.

This case you should know, it was released on epic games store exclusively for one year.

It's ok - for a 4x game.

I agree - based on the information we have currently. Humankind is the game to refer to, for to find similarities, when it comes to (new?) game mechanics.

Interesting, you know of something similar to steamcharts on epic games store anybody else is aware of? So from where do you get reliable numbers? Again, Old World was exclusive for epic games store for more than one year. So most 4x gamers, what didn't want to wait one year, did buy it and play it on epic games store. And the developers of Old World repeatedly wrote, they are very happy about their sales numbers.

In short: to compare Old World with Civ on steam charts is pointless, given the facts. You should know that, not?

Also the developers from Mohawk Games didn't have the opportunity to develop a fanbase over close to 34 years, now, given Old World is a new game. By the way, did you know parts of the team of Old World once worked on Civlilization III and IV? Source: https://mohawkgames.com/team/

They mean in the Civilization franchise it is new and bold. They are not talking about the whole PC gaming industry.

I see little in common with Civ 7 and Old World.

Yes, they're confused. Civ V: Brave New World is still the gold standard of the franchise.
