Probably a bug. I've not had any problem with upgrading units, so who knows.

Is it still a level 1 legion or did it upgrade to a level 2 legion? Civ unique units keep their name and model through the upgrades in an age.

The unique unit for your civ has multiple tiers so that it doesn't go obsolete until the end of the age. Check out the unit banner, there will be more chevrons and the legionary will be stronger. Lacking in flavour, but at least your legionary doesn't fade out of relevance in twenty turns.

Upgraded to Legionary level 2? Think that's a thing.

I really hope this changes! I get the idea but playing France I was excited after the napoleonic era to have a ww1/ww2 fight in the new world using fortifications for trenchs.

Only to discover I have napoleonic infantry along ww2 tanks with no choice to ever change that...

I didn't even know you could upgrade a unit. I checked but did (not yet) find any button that could trigger this. How do you do this?

It's hidden behind the arrow on the left of the unit stats where the sleep button is. Took me a whole age to find it myself. Just like I never noticed the button to change a town to a city until reaching modern age...
