I don't know. I played Civ VI a lot but I would lie if I say I completed many games to the end. (modder or otherwise). It's complete you can't go wrong if you want Civ and taste of what Civ VII offers.

But. Civ VII just does pacing and many other things better while really having rough edges. I am enjoying Civ VII a lot more than I did CiV VI when it launched that's for sure

And to the comment above Civ IV didn't age at all that well, I honestly wouldn't recommend it for first try.

You will get different answers of course. Civ 7 is great and will only get better with updates

the games are very different, i would suggest doing some more research by watching some yt video on gameplay and than seeing what you prefer.
you dont know the preferences of the people responding here, so you will never know if you will agree with their assessment. things are a lot clearer when watching a yt video.

Read the Store Page, maybe watch some fast forward lets plays that show the age transistions and the gameplay. Then decide if you like it.

The age/civ system seems for a lot people, with huge civ experiecne, a huge dealbreaker, so you maybe should focus your decission on that part.

Civ VI because Civ VII is not worthy to be part of the civilization legacy. It has completely undone everything that Civilization was about, completely undone it.

If you're expecting to be able to build a civilization to "withstand the test of time," you'll be extremely disappointed. They designed a game for mindless people that do not like strategy.

This game cannot be called strategy at all, let alone an actual civilization game. The developers have trashed this game.

Brilliant whey of putting it

Neither. Buy Civ 5. By far the best.

My credentials:

Civ 5: 1300 hours played
Civ 6: 500 hours played

Of the above hours, this was 75% multiplayer.

Civ 5 is the winner by a country mile.

Really depends what your type of 4x game is.

If you're more playing for the game systems and management options over just bubbly visuals and streamlined progression, then really out of all the Civilization games Civ 4 is probably your better option for a solid wide reaching 4x game.

Especially if once you're familiar with the systems of Civ 4 and how the game plays you then start to look into some of the major mod projects for the game some of which are still being actively developed and improved to this day.

Despite what the numbers might suggest, the games don't actually just improve and become better than the last game with a smaller number.

There was a pretty diverse development mentality shift between Civ 4 and Civ 5 that you might as well view them as being developed by a entirely different studio as entirely different types of game.

This. Civ6 is a good game but poor AI. Here is much better I guess.
Stick to IV and/or V imho.

I think you should do both
Pick whichever strikes your fancy the most.

But I'd suggest not buying a Civ game on launch as it historically takes a while before it is polished enough, or if you're wanting it to be content complete, i.e. DLCs are bundled in a single package with the base game.
