Cross play broken because of Patch 1.0.1 rollout
I'm playing a game with my friend. I'm on PC and he's on PS5. The game now no longer works because of a version mismatch. I seem to be on 1.0.1.1 where as PS5 is 1.0.1.

Why would they do this and ruin the cross play games in progress?

I'm having the same issue but vice versa! It's annoying and frustrating as I don't have many hours to game anymore. Why would they deliberately push out a patch that breaks cross play?

It's not broken, they turned it off for the moment:

A note about cross-play multiplayer: To expedite updates to the PC experience, we will sometimes deploy patches to PC at a different cadence than we do on consoles - including today's Patch 1.0.1. As a result, cross-play between PC players and console players is temporarily disabled. This will have no impact on console players attempting cross-platform play with other console players, nor on PC-to-PC multiplayer.
I am having the same issue, can't play anymore, now wait indefinitely till the patch finally arrives for PS?
How long of a delay? I only bought the Steam copy so I could play against my wife on XBox. I've bought two copies of the game and I can't play either.

Yeah, any ETA for the console patch?

Same problem here. Annoying as I bought the game on PS5 to play with my son who's on PC - we don't have 2 PCs powerful enough for the game. We were waiting for launch day with excitement as it was announced that cross play would be available at launch, but actually it's not...
Would be good to at least have an announcement about when things will work again.
Would be better if there was an option for Pc users to be able to downgrade the version of the game to enable crossplay
I have not tested this yet as I am waiting for my buddy to get on, but you can right click on the game go to properties and click BETA tab, then change your version to the cross console version and it will keep (in theory) your version the same as console and you can play. Will know later woulda tested it earlier in the week but schedules.

The thing people don't understand is that consoles have a very difficult patch process. You can't just ship the patch it has to get approval.

PC you can just patch and go with almost no roadblocks.

Devs literally don't control when the console cops allow a patch to go through. The vast majority of Civ players are on PC, devs aren't gonna punish them because consoles have a slow patch cycle.

I was able to join friends on the console doing this. Hope it helps.

Note also that all the consoles can still crossplay, it is only that you can't put PC in the mix.

You can though, you just have to change your version via right clicking on the game going to properties and clicking on the BETA tab, then change the version in the upper right to the Console Compatible version (may be a little off on the name) then it updates/rolls back and you can play with consoles, just did this earlier with a friend.

Sure you can use the unpatched version. Paradox games do this all the time, you can roll back dozens of versions thanks to Steam.
