Sid Meier's Civilization VII

Sid Meier's Civilization VII

Looking for honest opinion
Is the game really deserving of mixed reviews? I’m a longtime fan of strategy games, including Civilization. I’ve played almost all of the most famous strategy games, from RTS to grand strategy. Will I enjoy this game?

This game is fun. The negative reviews are a bit disingenuous. But I can still constructively complain about items like what I denoted above.
Interesting. What do you feel about the negative reviews is "disingenuous"?
A four year old child can construct an argument better than most of the people who complain about the game.

its ok... i guess.

not worth the price tag currently. hopefully day 1 patch fixes lots of things
So... these tell me that, if you are a classic civ player that uses the tactical map, quick movement, quick combat, and likes the grand strategy aspect of the game, if say you're a civ completionist like me (100% of the achievements in 6), or enjoy hacking and modding on a PC, and are not here for something that just looks cool for a single playthrough on a Nintendo Switch, then...

Pros:
- Civilization 7 is absolutely beautiful; this is without question the best-looking game of the franchise.
- The variety in how units look...
- Commanders look...
- Wonders look...
- Full HDR Support...

Cons:
- The UI for me hasn’t been an issue at all, none
- The inability to set the refresh rate specifically in the game...
- Wished we could pick the colors for our civilizations.
- Need more options for game settings, ability to select colors

Well, it might not be the game for you.

But if you want something beautiful, and... from these...

Publicado originalmente por JDPUK:
Pros:
- Commanders... very similar to Humankind...
- No more need to lay roads and have construction workers etc...
- I actually like that we can change civilizations per age...

Cons:
- No modern age ... I’m happy they did.
- The undiscovered portions (Editor note : This is called "fog of war") of the map with the Civ logo tiles

... if you really liked Humankind, then Civ 7 is your game.

I personally like something that's responsive, has depth, makes me think, forces me into trial-and-error, makes me save and load a lot while I'm improving my gameplay, and leaves me with a feeling of accomplishment.

But honestly, none of what I just said is a dig or a complaint. I am actually glad Civ is going in this direction because, this is going to hurt to say,

I am 44 years old.

If civ is going to survive and get adopted by future generations, they need something more accessible. They can do nintendo hard eventually, watch the kids play kaizo mario maps and you and you will be so proud and remember ourselves pushing our way through battletoads and ninja turtles. But they need, to draw them in, before they go down that road, excellent visuals that feed into escapism, the same way you and I did at their age. I can't be the only person out there who felt like the playstation games my friend owned were better than my nintendo 64 games because my characters looked like their skin was made out of knives and grease stains.

So I say, bravo to Firaxis for reading the room. The game is going to get terrible reviews from people like me that aren't getting what we crave out of a civ game, but I am positive in a year's time this will be game of the year worthy, and they'll manage to add some real challenge and depth and, most importantly, responsiveness so we don't have to wait wait wait wait wait for the computer to do anything at all.

This is probably accurate. It's definitely aimed at a different audience, and if that's the direction they want to go, I wish them well at it -- without my personal support. (Take-Two is a massive company. Firaxis is in good hands. They don't need my money anyway.)

I got several good games out of the series, if this is the new direction they're taking. Firaxis doesn't owe me anything, nor do I owe them. I respect the choice, even if it's not for me.

Several game series still ARE for me, and now I have more money to spend on those! :steamhappy:

Alternatively, it's for fans of "normal" Civilization who are excited about the new features.
You're the first I've met. I'm sure there's a few others, but most of the complaints I've seen revolve around changes that weren't asked for by quite a bit of the veteran playerbase.

We just wanted better AI, bigger maps, more civs and more OPTIONAL game modes.
"More of the same" has never been the design philosophy of Civilization sequels.

I know, they keep feeling like they have to add a truck stick to justify making another game, but did they ever really need to do that?

I mean, what do most players want in the end but more of the same that they've enjoyed in the past?

I'm not sure how you would define "need" in this context., but I suspect the reason we're on the seventh iteration of an extremely successful 34 year old game franchise is because Meier wasn't content with just releasing "more of the same".

Like I said, yeah, I get that they feel like they gotta reinvent stuff with every installment to justify making the new installment, but if we went back to Civ IV: BTS and gave it the 2025 glowup treatment, you're telling me you don't think it'd sell like mad?

I'd buy it. You wouldn't?

My honest opinion ....... This game is crap.......... Through the ages I have bought and played all the games in the Civ franchise. From the floppy disk Amiga version of the original to Civ VI. I thought Civ VI was bad but this new iteration of the game is beyond woeful and a waste of anyone's hard earned $$$ (including my own pre-purchse $$$). It has lost the very essence of what made a Civ game in this franchise. Now we have something that is like a cross between Amplitudes "Humankind" and some other abortion of a Civilization building game. So, in short, if you like the Civ franchise and other's similar in game play then you are not going to like this one ........ Civ VII sucks

As long as it has the title civilization and it is new people will buy it no matter how terribly it is made, just look at civ 6.

I can already play Civilization IV whenever I want, so, no, I wouldn't buy a simple "remaster" unless it contained significant new features.

Fair enough, but I thought BTS was peak gameplay for the series, so I would. For me, it's the gameplay, and less about what's "new" or "different".

If same is good, then more of the same is better, for us types. Ain't nothing wrong with that, yeah?

It has to be new and remove all of the good features from the older games or the modern devs wouldn't be able to pat themselves on the back for adding something to the franchise.

COPY and Paste all comments from the CIV6 forum about CIV6 at release.
I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. The game has a rating and a bunch of comments -- but on my monitor it appears that it hasn't been released to Steam yet.

What gives?
