Playing with extended age?
I've heard that you often can't get to enjoy the last techs for each age, because the age ends before you had time to actually use the tech or even research it. The recommendation was to play with extended age setting. Do you agree?

No it doesn't solve anything. I played Marathon last night and nearly see the half of the tech tree in all ages.

There are different settings for game length and age length. It sounds like S.P.Q.R might have mistook one setting for the other. It is a confusing way to present it.

The age length has options 'abbreviated, standard, and long(?)'. I did the long one (i forgot what its called but not marathon, thats game speed), and found myself Future Tech'ing about 10 times by the time the age had about 51%. So it works!
I think the point is with higher level leaders and better perks and more efficient strategies you can reach it quicker.

its just called 'long', tho depending on your game speed you will have different levels of success with it
for instance, the 'long' age duration makes almost no difference if you play on 'marathon' speed as it doesnt scale with the speed setting, meanwhile for standard speed, long duration makes it easy to research everything

i tend to reach the end or near the end with the long ages, normal game speed

I havent bothered changing game speed, as when I tried that in previous civ games, it would take 24 turns to train an 8 turn scout or something silly, and could have the world explored mapped out before I've even researched writing lol. And online speed was just 2 quick to do anything.

I like they have the option to extend an age but keep the game speed as normal, I can play and get to grips with whats going on better, there is room for error as I learn and I can chill not stress.
