Incosistent Yields?

Hoping someone can help explain to me why I find my yields to vary up to +/- 50% without building any new buildings, improvements, making a deal or any action that would seem to make a change. Have had turns where I change nothing because I am waiting for something that could have an impact to be produced yet Science will decrease by 10 points. Can someone help explain?
