Who is this for?
There more I learn about the game the more puzzled I get.

Poor optimization and ♥♥♥♥ UI is just modern AAA slop. It's to be expected today.

But the age splits?
The meta-progression?
Civ swapping?
The limited game options?
Quests?

Do any Civ fans actually want this? Especially the age splits.

Also wouldn't it make more sense for the Civ to remain and the leader to change?

All this instead of refining the game that people already love. It doesn't make sense to me,

Lots of functionality is gone, and I was just getting used them in Civ 6. I hope we at least get use of the workshop on Steam.

Which one? There are fans of Civ 4 who hated 5 and hate it still. There is the same going on for 5 and 6. Which one is the gold standard for civ and who has to judge? You?
It should have been old civ type at launch, with the added option to play in the new age split mode if desired... Everything is so hard coded in the age split way that we might just have to play 6 until 8 lol.
These last few civ games are gonna feel emptier than the previous ones with years of dlc and expansions yeh. It sucks but it's the track record rn. Game will probably cheaper & better in 2-3 years.

Yes, I do. I loved Humankind and was happy to see Civ taken some of their concepts and implementing it a bit better than Amplitude did. The age system and civ switching are pretty cool imho, once you get over the immersion break.
And I've been a Civ fan since Civ 1 many years ago.
I hate how Ages wipe the slate. I really dislike changing civs mid game. I feel like I am playing 3 mini games instead of one huge game that lasts a very long time. I can easily turn it off. I have no need to play one more turn

I guess it is for people who have too much money to burn on a mediocre remaster which actually fails in all aspects.
If it fails in all aspects, then what makes it still mediocre?
No, very few people want this.
I think they were spooked by Old World and Humankind

A lot of people bought the game though, in full knowledge of the civ switching and isolated ages. So what makes you think only very few people want this?

Well, that went up 13% in a single day. Let's wait a week before drawing conclusions from that. And by far most negative (and many positive) reviews complain about the UI, not the civ switching.

You mean when all the non-zealots get a taste of this failure?

Yes, lets indeed wait for that, with a large bag of popcorn.
I’ve played every Civ game from Sid. I bought Civilization before it had any numbered sequels. This is a major departure. I've never encountered such a drastic shift with any new version release. Does this game suck? I don't know; I still have to learn it, but it feels incredibly jarring compared to Civ 6. The age shifts feel like I'm being dropped into a different game each time.

But let's not be overdramatic. No one has lost anything. The old games still exist, and you can always return to them.
