How do you manually build roads?
I have a merchant (trader) and want to manually build a road between my capital and a town, but the option to build the road is greyed out. Anyone know what to do?

That's the best part, you don't!
For merchants, you have to send them to the AI town and then the button will be enabled to start the trade route (I think that's what you are asking)
Roads are automatically built between cities/towns when you settle them. Merchants create roads to other cities outside your empire when progressing their trade route
Not sure if it works the same way in Civ 7, but in Civ 6 you *could* manually build roads:

Military engineer support unit could build roads manually, in Civ 6, but you have to build an encampment district, and a barracks and armory building in it, to build the military engineer.

Again, I don't own Civ 7, but that's the one way roads were manually built in the last game.

Apart from manually building them, though, yeah, looks like in this one merchants build them like trade-routes had in the last game, which others said.

So long as the town is within 10 tiles or so, you get an auto road.

not sure if im doing something wrong or its a bug, but my town didn't connect a road to my city and my city isnt getting any of the yields from it.

I'm not getting auto roads between my cities and towns that are within 10 tiles. Is it civ specific?

Me neither. I have settled 5 tiles away, absolutely no water in between, yet no road was created.

Same here, other people say "They just appear" but my cities are sadly roadless. 7 tiles away, nothing but tundra, desert and plains.

with your merchant, you should see a build road button
  1. I have a merchant in my settlement.
  2. There is a settlement with no road connection, and the route would be 10 hexes.
  3. I advance to a new turn so the merchant has all movement points.
  4. The 'build road' button is disabled, with the message:
"Cannot build a road: no settlements within range that need connection back to this settlement"

That's the issue. There's nothing to actually tell you what the range is for building a road or doing trade routes. You just have to guess. Sometimes it'll work, other times not.
I’m also having this problem, no roads and option on merchant is greyed out.

Same! Three ways possible, but the button is greyed out!

See isn't it great that they removed your ability to build roads yourself? I'm so glad we made the game around the Nintendo Switch crowd, it would be way too complex to decide where to put our roads!
