Sid Meier's Civilization VII

Sid Meier's Civilization VII

This game is a PAID beta. 100%.
I have seen two lengthy videos on YouTube. One is closer to an hour (Marbozir), and the other is about 50 minutes (VanBradley), with a couple more by creators like Lemoncake and Drew IRL. Of course, I haven't played the game, but I've still invested significant time in research before writing this.

Then I watched the latest developer stream and their roadmap post-launch. They're going to ask for feedback while you waste your time navigating clunky game mechanics, UI issues, and performance problems. While you're busy just trying to sort the game out, they will release paid monthly DLCs and continue building the game from its initial release state. You're just their lure. I personally don't see this game being in a somewhat complete state until next February or March.

At the end of the day, this is still just an opinion. You can take it as a warning, or disregard it and follow your own judgment. I have nothing to lose but the two or three hours I've already spent making my decision.

Good luck, take care, and stay happy.

What you're describing is the normal game creation iteration cycle. We'll see you (or not) after a future Steam Sale. Nothing wrong with waiting.

Me, I'm always happy to play a game I know I'll play for 1000s of hours eventually and let them collect my data and improve the game :)
then dont pay for it
Yeah just wait for the first big price drop or the expansions to be out and included in one package for a reasonable price.
Game has to many issues to be enjoyable right now.
I've watched a few gameplay videos and I'm absolutely stoked. I don't get what some people are crying about, to be honest.

I don't even understand your point of view. What developers DON'T take player feedback into account and patch accordingly, these days?

The last game was supported for a decade. They didn't make that happen without income. This isn't Terraria or Stardew Valley, either. Like it or not, every business will close without revenue, and development studios aren't any different. Let the whales spit money out their blow-wholes and enjoy the free content updates and base game, and maybe the big DLCs when they're available. What's wrong with that? FOMO? Entitlement?

Games couldn't afford to not be perfect on launch before, because there was no way to fix them. Then slowly, we started getting patches and dev blogs, DLC's and cosmetics, and whatever else.

I don't like being nickel-and-dimed anymore than you do, trust me. Still, this isn't a problem with the devs, it's the current landscape. So the choice is yours. Make the best decision for you. If there isn't enough to make you feel like you'll make a satisfied purchase, then there are plenty of other titles to choose from.

I see why people are bummed or upset about certain design choices, and about the DLC already being available. I get it. Why make big changes, and why streamline, and why not include all of this for the day one's? It's totally fair to feel those things. To the point of this post, though, everything about taking in feedback and using that to make the game better is GOOD. I sincerely can't believe otherwise. There's a big difference between early copies and in-house players giving feedback, versus hundreds of thousands of players that span a wide array of skill and aptitude.

Do you not want improvements over time? And why does DLC invalidate that?

The game looks feature complete for me, but I also skipped Civ 6's dlc's and updates. Didn't care for it after a few playthroughs. So for a player like me, 7 looks like the holy grail. YMMV.

I wouldn't disagree with that statement. You are looking at a couple of years for two expansions.

However, this game is very much playable at launch. That's something that Civ VI could never achieve. When that game was released, I was not happy. It was straight garbage.

As it is, this game will still be fun. They've given us a lot to work with and practice for.

I can't imagine getting bored for a few hundred hours. I know that I won't clear a thousand until the expansions arrive, but there are other games that we want to play this year. It's not Civilization VII or bust.

AC: Shadows and Anno 117: Pax Romana are on my list.

Shame. I guess I'll have to play what we're given for a couple hundred hours before I shelve it and wait for it to be finished.
from what i have seen the game is stable and not many bugs, so no it's not a beta.
i cannot wait to play it
Hey guys, my apologies. I am not here to judge anyone. I am simply sharing my observations. Of course, if we all think the same then there would never be any disagreements.

Ultimately your money and time are yours. No one else's. This is just - a Discussion post.

I think all games are these days, esp indy games, people think it's just some code and an idea then they find out what's really needed and how long it really takes and they release early to try to fund the continual maintenance and upkeep with a hope to making a better game. Then they get into finance issues, sell themselves and end up like biosoft.
Yeah, I get that the last few games were a bit light on content at release. Didn't stop me enjoying V and VI when they came out. No way I'm getting this one at release though. 2K has been having money trouble and it shows with what they've done on VII. Paid DLC a month after release and their free content continuing their scenarios from VI (which I never got into) is thoroughly disappointing.

Really hoping the game ends up being good, as no other 4X games have come close to Civ for me, but at this point I'll probably be sticking with other games for awhile.
So was BG3. Big deal.

Yeah but all of BG3's updates were free, with no paid DLC.
Yep this game is defo in Beta mode, don't think 2K care much as many will buy it regardless of the poor state of release.
Civ 1 fine and complete and this was even on diskettes, not CD/DVD/DL
Civ 2 fine and complete on release
Civ 3 fine and complete on release but offered an expansion which really was for multiplayer (this was 56k/Rj15 connected, dial tone before connecting days of the internet).
Civ Call to Power 1 & 2 fine and complete on release
Civ 4 was a steaming pile before 2 expansions
Civ 5 was a steaming pile before the 2 expansions.
Sid Meyers Beyond Earth steaming pile and possibly the worst Civ even after expansions and DLC
Civ 6 was a steaming pile until the community helped out the game and balance via modding.
Civ 7 is looking like a steaming pile, but on a wait and see status, and offers day 1 DLC.

Not to mention each iteration of the game has a substantial price hike.
I am starting to see a trend, not just with Civ but all games
It is almost like the game industry is trying to implode on itself, on purpose.
Every game since oblivion has been beta at release. Civ has always followed the 1/3 model, and leader/civ pack have been in atleast the last two games. why are people surprised by this? how much research did you really do?
