Rome isn't Modern.
Rome is only in the Antiquity Age.
You'll want to think about who you want to finish the game with in the Modern Age, then plan accordingly.
For example, if you want to finish as America, you could choose Mississippian > Shawnee > America.
You just have to plan ahead this time if there is a certain Civilization that you really want to play.
Do i get to chose the civilizations or are they forced paths?
Like I choose Rome then.... whatever.... then America?
Your ability to choose a given civilization in the next age is based on your accomplishments in the previous age (e.g. settling near certain terrain). There are also "Historical" choices based on your leader and previous civ, that are always available. If you're not playing specifically for the next age, you can expect to have 4-6 choices at the transition point.
You choose based on what you have unlocked access to.
Your leader unlocks certain civ choices. Your antiquity age civ choice will unlock access to certain exploration age and modern age civs. And finally, you unlock civ choices in the next age by taking certain actions as you progress. For example, you can unlock access to Spain by having a settlement captured and then recapturing it during the antiquity age.
Each time the age changes, you will have several options available to you for what civ you will become in the next age.
That's def very new. It's def not what I would normally be interested in but ♥♥♥♥ does that mechanic sound interesting.
Sounds like you will be much more comfortable playing with Ben Franklin as your leader, paired with either Greece or Rome as your Civ in the Antiquity Age (since their cultures heavily influenced revolutionary-era American political thinking). Then you can play someone like the Normans in the next age--and finish up with America in the Modern Age. Very traditional set of choices, and much more "historical" than playing as America in 4000 BC. And not at all "woke." See, they've accounted for your preferences. Happier now? :)
