Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

Vis statistikker:
Current Stats: 27.5k Playing Civ7 vs 32.5k Playing Civ6
Civ7 has a bit over 10k more over the last 24-hour peak - 63k vs 51k

I guess it's up to you how to interpret this data, but to me, this doesn't sound good for Civ7. That more people are playing the previous game late into the night than the current game isn't a particularly good sign, especially this early into the lifecycle of the new game, imo.

What do you guys think?

So I guess US is playing on consoles and Asia+Europe on Steam

very bad sign for player retention. this is still the honeymoon period and should't even be a contest. we still don't have data about console sales but there are reviews. we can see on playstation store 1.6k reviews with a score of 2.91. compared to steam with 27k reviews and 51.58 positive indicates pc sales far overshadow console sales

For most of the first 3 years of civ6, civ5 had more players than civ6. Look at the stats on steamdb for 2017, 2018, 2019.

As we all know, the series ended with civ6 and the civ franchise is dead.

Every Civ release takes a while to get going yeah, the playerbase always takes months/years before jumping onboard completely.

That is not entirely accurate. There are Civ games that have crashed and burned and where people never have jumped on board. Specifically we can name Beyond Earth which btw. had a slightly stronger opening than even Civ 7 at a time at which Steam was much smaller as a platform. It started strong (similar to Civ 5 numbers with around 87k players) but then almost immediately did a dive on the player activity and never recoved from that. Within about 6 months the numbers dropped to around 5k active players and outside of minor jumps when the game was sold at a heavily reduced price the average player numbers continued to dwindle.

And no one really talks about Beyond Earth anymore because most people never played it. It used the same basic construct as Civ 5 did (you know - the supposedly best one) and gave it a twist but while doing that basically did everything worse. And even with an actual DLC expanding on the content Beyond Earth never took off again.
Looks very bad, hopefully this game sells enough so that Firaxis continues to release updates and support so that it will eventually be good in 2 years. Because that's when I plan on picking it up, on sale when bugs are fixed, UI is improved and much more content and map options are added. I also hope this encourages Civ youtubers to keep making civ 6 content, seeing as so many people are evidently not convinced by the newest title's offering.
