As with most other aspects of the game, the larger map sizes feature simply was not ready at the time of release. They'll add it in future patches.
I am not being forced or compelled in any way to say this by my hosts at 2K Games.
I refunded the game, party because of this, and map types.
I'll play again when they officially add the stuff that should have been there, but it seems like that may take a while.
In most games if you change things, you have to rebalance.
I imagine, because of the new game mechanics they chose for 7, they intentionally stuck to map types that complimented their "Vision".
It's basically a board game, and their ruleset didn't allow for....options.😞🙄
#1 - They wanted that cross-play money from the Switch.
#2 - They wanted that 'lower-end hardware' money from PC.
Now, I am not *entirely* judging them for being a business and, you know, needing to pursue the bottom line. Within reason, that's part of the two-way-street between business and consumer.
Having just 'standard' as the max map size, though, seems to be verging on absurdity. And whatever it was to be named, the 'standard' size on this looks equivalent to a standard size map of Civ 6, or a bit smaller, if anything.
Whatever the case, the map size issue is clearly not solely one of keeping the gameplay balanced or making the content more interesting. And again, some trade-offs are okay if kept within reasonable limits, but the map sizes in Civ 7 look fairly limited. Not everyone wants to play on a Huge or Large map, but to not even have the *option* to do so is kind of wild.
