Even Firaxis tried to remake Xcom and failed horribly.. they made a fairly decent game, but it wasn't xcom.
I learned how to play, did the 5 tutorials and liked it so much that I bought all the DLCs, before actually start playing. Old World is excellent, it is truly historical, it is not as comprehensive as previous civilization games, because the action only takes place in ancient times in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, but it incorporates dynasties, simulations and events and we have to manage them all.
I love Civ V and Civ VI (with all DLCs and Civ V skin), but I'm also loving Old World, the game is on par with previous Civ games and apparently way above Civ VII.
I'm not the biggest Old World player but come on. They gameplay is totally different.
To this suggestion, Humankind is what the Major divisive changes to Civ VII are based off of. Definitely not recommended as an alternative to this.
Not only that, but the game tanked due to the same.
Ara looks very pretty, but is a pretty horrible game, even compared to Civ VII lol.
I really liked the game at first but by mid game I was so over all that tedious management.
Ara is ok but it's very micromanagement-heavy. Not my thing but it is a potential alternative.
Humankind is pretty good but the leaders are very bland and the game has long spells which are boring.
Old work is excellent as well but it's a little different experience that pure civ since it's sort of a blend of crusader kings. Not really my thing.
For actual Civ games, V and VI are very good with V being the top one. IV is excellent as well but it's a little dated.
Even with the Civ7 version of Endless Legend growth where you can't fiddle the citizens around it *eventually* ends up being tedious to place so many citizens every turn. Especially as the number of "premium" tiles is too small compared to the "cleanup tiles" that you eventually take just to fill out the borders.
No game so far has found a good solution. Except maybe Spore? But they were too ambitious.
This alone is what led me to refund well before Feb 6th, when I began seeing what Civ VII was going to be. And it made me very sad, too, considering how much I was excited for it.
