What are the best Civ alternatives?
Tried Humankind and hated it. What other similar games to Civ are out there?

Old World is alot like Humankind.. both imo are pretty dire. You just can't beat the originals.
Even Firaxis tried to remake Xcom and failed horribly.. they made a fairly decent game, but it wasn't xcom.
I gave up on buying Civ VII after I knew about the horrendous era mechanic, a decision confirmed after Civ VII reviews from gamers, and I decided to try Old World instead, a game from Soren Johnson, Lead Designer of Civilization IV.

I learned how to play, did the 5 tutorials and liked it so much that I bought all the DLCs, before actually start playing. Old World is excellent, it is truly historical, it is not as comprehensive as previous civilization games, because the action only takes place in ancient times in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, but it incorporates dynasties, simulations and events and we have to manage them all.

I love Civ V and Civ VI (with all DLCs and Civ V skin), but I'm also loving Old World, the game is on par with previous Civ games and apparently way above Civ VII.

Old World isn't similar to Humankind at all?

I'm not the biggest Old World player but come on. They gameplay is totally different.

This is true for big part, Old world is quite unique to the classic 4x model

You'll have to be more specific. Do you specifically want a historical 4X that covers cavemen to cosmos? There's not really good options.
I dont know if that was on purpose, but there is an in-depth mod for Civ IV called "Cavemen to Cosmos".
Humankind 2 disguised as Civ 7.

I love Old World, which I found as I was looking for a civ 6 alternative. I have played Millenia ( did not like it) and Humankind (sort of liked it) But I love Old World, I think I clocked in over 2,000 hours. IT also ads another aspect to the CIV style of game. Also has some really cool mods in the workshop.

Old World has a big advantage over Civ-likes because it doesn't portray the full sweep of human history. So the design can be way tighter and flavorful.

Humankind, Millenia, Old World, but none of them are even close to the same level as Civ.

To this suggestion, Humankind is what the Major divisive changes to Civ VII are based off of. Definitely not recommended as an alternative to this.

Not only that, but the game tanked due to the same.

Ara History Untold is by far better game. And a lot better looking then civ 7.

Ara looks very pretty, but is a pretty horrible game, even compared to Civ VII lol.

I know ARA is UI hell but what are the other reasons it sucks? Never played it.
Those recommending Old World - aren't you finding mid/late game TEDIOUS as all hell? you end up with like 2000 characters you have to manage and worry about, and spammed by 10 different "events" per turn. It gets so tedious and annoying.

I really liked the game at first but by mid game I was so over all that tedious management.

For a non-civ game, Millennia is probably the closest thing to Civ.

Ara is ok but it's very micromanagement-heavy. Not my thing but it is a potential alternative.

Humankind is pretty good but the leaders are very bland and the game has long spells which are boring.

Old work is excellent as well but it's a little different experience that pure civ since it's sort of a blend of crusader kings. Not really my thing.

For actual Civ games, V and VI are very good with V being the top one. IV is excellent as well but it's a little dated.

Which is ironic since their goal was to remove micro. I think the big problem with civ style 4x games, if you don't like the repetitiveness, is that it requires the gameplay to change focus quite radically as you get more settlements because doing the same thing with 10 settlements as you do with 1 or 2 settlements is obviously going to be a mess.

Even with the Civ7 version of Endless Legend growth where you can't fiddle the citizens around it *eventually* ends up being tedious to place so many citizens every turn. Especially as the number of "premium" tiles is too small compared to the "cleanup tiles" that you eventually take just to fill out the borders.

No game so far has found a good solution. Except maybe Spore? But they were too ambitious.

This alone is what led me to refund well before Feb 6th, when I began seeing what Civ VII was going to be. And it made me very sad, too, considering how much I was excited for it.
