If you are open to any 4X you have a lot of choices.
Millennia, Old World, and ARA, are all quite different games from Humankind.
If you accept fantasy you have tons of options. Depends though on if you want to play a game like Civ 6 or Civ 5 or if you are open to games more like Civ 3/4.
Moving on from there you can play fantasy 4X games like Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic, Spellforce: Conquest Of Eo, or Eador.
You could also swap to Paradox games like EU4/CK2.
AoW4 is very Civ 7 like, and CK3 is very graphics first/gameplay last but some people prefer that.
Endless Legend is probably the closest alternative to the series you will get in terms of gameplay.
Next would be the Age of Wonders games. A lot of people loved Planetfall and I do hear 4 is a lot better now than it was when I played it. Those games are civ style world map gameplay, but combat is X-COM.
Old World (antiquity only), EU4 (Renaissance to the Napoleonic era), Warhammer Gladius 40K (scify), Age of Wonder 3 or 4 (fantasy), Age of Wonder Planetfall (scify).
You have to lose your 'civ mindset' though to approach either one as you learn them.
I do not recommend Humankind, Ara: history untold and Milenia, all these are mid imo and I didnt find them worth it.
Old world I think is objectivly good, but more aquired taste, I tried twice and never was able to get into it.
Endless legend is good, bit older tho.
Old World. Excellent. Have not played it for a while but I've got some fond memories from that one. I played as Rome and it was touch and go the whole game through (a real nail biter), I think I played on the hardest difficulty. I'd rate that one 10/10.
I once suggested someone here play that while waiting for civ to get some polish and folks came out of the wood work at me, "People who like civ wouldnt like AoW, whats wrong with you!!??"
Im relieved to see another here.
Age of Wonders 4 has been a lot of fun lately. Its highly addictive and actually the city expansions work a bit like in civ 7. Its more military focused and exploring the maps but still a very fun game.
Fallen Enchantress is another like that that is really enjoyable but bit older.
Endless Space 2 deserves a mention as a general 4X. Maybe still the best UI in 4X too btw.
