This version of the game is too good to go cheap.
I want all of the content for this puppy. Aside from the figurines, pins, paperwork, coins, clocks, and other trinkets.
This will be the first game where Firaxis won't need to ban me for giving them sh--.
They are finally doing a great job.

Perhaps someone will come up with a better solution, but I think one way to do it is to refund the gift edition (I think it's possible to refund a gift...) then buy the edition you want once the refund goes through.
It's not an elegant answer, especially since your friend will see that you refunded it, but it's the only way I can think of.

Is there a way to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition?
At launch, you can purchase a Standard to Deluxe Upgrade to receive all content in the Deluxe Edition (except for Early Access, which ends on February 11, 2025). This upgrade option will be available until 2:00 PM PT on February 28, 2025.
