Feels like the game has been designed for the mobile app market
I have to be honest, from what we've seen so far it does give the impression that the developers are stripping the game of any depth and specialisation, and edging toward making it as generic as possible with a lot of core components being removed (barbarians, religion, etc).

Forcing smaller games (max of 5 players), on a map which will only expand through ages (so likely that everyone has been bunched together in a very small cluster at the start), is heavily dictating what you can and cannot do; so the game is going to lose a lot of sandbox appeal and make it pretty one dimensional in the way it must be played - and that's a bit concerning for replayability.

The animations, UI, etc., all give the impression that it has been designed first and foremost for the app and console market at the detriment of PC capability, and to ensure performance on those devices I can't imagine there's any intention to provide any meaningful depth to the game mechanics (perhaps this is the reason why things such as barbarians and religion was removed?).

With the ability to override leader perks and abilities by selecting from various options, it reduces the leader to being nothing more than just a "skin", to go along with the tile skins, city skins, and whatever else is going to be visually monetised down the road.

While it has been slapped with texture improvements for the graphic elements, there hasn't been any information on whether the gameplay itself has significantly improved since its predecessors; and the lack of information around that point begs to question if game difficulty is going to be a continuation of overpowered bonuses given to the AI but not any effort in actually making the AI play smarter.

Beyond that considering the price point of the game, it feels very much that the developers are wanting to cash in on this in the early stage as soon as possible, as opposed to having any faith in Civ 7's longevity; and that's also a bit of a concern especially with all the foundations put down which will lead to further purchases (skins, leader packs, etc).

Its going to work on switch out the box, its basically a mobile game already. Would not be surprised if they have an in game currency you could buy and timers on things that you have to click when they are done producing.

Civ was never a hard core strategy series to be honest, but at least, it hanged just on the sweet spot between serious strategy and casual gaming. It was, already, super friendly to casuals in mechanics, tutorials and presentation. But certainly seems so far like they're ditching even this compromise, and going all the way to casualize the series as you suggest.

Its a bit unfair to criticize the mobile devices themselves, because they're essentially computers too, and there's nothing preventing the apps to offer gameplay depth over there as well. Its more about the market that is actually being targeted.

You can play Civ 6 on android and ipads... it doesn't mean much. It's not a game very hardware demanding, so could be released on PC, MAC, switch, android and iOS.

Ofcourse it is basically mobile app! There are much more players using mobile devices than there are PC players!
They get more customers this way than making pure PC game!

It runs on a switch FFS! Civ 7 is a mobile, iPad type of game. Case closed.

But that is not enough justification.

Why cant we build for both. Must it always be one size fits all. There is no issue to build a UI for mobile platform, then scale it up and add more depth for the PC, mouse and keyboard users.

This is only a decision that can be made by management with Devs. We build for both markets and build it well. Imagine a game that has that mentality, everyone is happy and you get more positive reputation right from launch.
I always wom

I always wonder the same
Only small maps on switch version. It’s not less complicated just streamlined. There is more complexity here than in previous games in terms of combinations you can build and in terms of combat. Read some actual reviews
