If your country is dragged into a war through an alliance, that alliance timer is put on pause until the end of hostilities with the aggressor country

This could also be the same logic if your ally asks for you to join them in a war against another country.
I agree with this. This would be quite unpleasant to get forced out of helping an ally after you sent your troops there.
You can't backstab during the Alliance. If the timer was paused, there wouldn't be any chance to backstab, because the Alliance would remain.
