The Imperial guard are a very conventional army like Marines but sacrifice speed mobility and close combat in favour of mass firepower and numbers. The special ability tweaks would be dead easy.
eg In place of Hellblasters you have heavy weapon squads with 3 Heavy weapon teams.
In place of Aggressors/Assault Terminators you have a squad of 3 Ogryns Which have less armour and less armour piercing but more hp and close combat attacks.
Leman Russ battle tanks would only need 3/4 turret options instead of the 7/8 in the codex.
eg
1) Battle Cannon (Blast a bit more powerful than a frag launcher.)
2)Vanquisher cannon (shot hits only 1 target but does Damage comparable to a melta gun but longer ranged.)
3)Punisher cannon. (Like Bael predator Assault cannon but with weaker Armour piercing)
and so on...... Its not like they have to invent what they look like all the appearances already exist.
They could add Guardsmen anytime they want to. I cant wait.
I agree, lets see the real heroes of the Imperium in the game.
Would love to see all four, similar to how Chaos Gate introduced so successfully, however suspect a little optimistic on my part.
WEN GUARD!
Guard are represented already in turn based games. In Chaos Gate, they serve as excellent shields against Plague spray and Nurgle spores.
In Sanctus Reach, you can play them in a good campaign against Orks.
Overall - I think Necron expansion would make the most sense as they really don't have a TBS campaign of their own yet and were AFAIK active in this system's campaign.
