The gameplay is similar but the world and characters are a lot more mundane. I personally liked it, but not nearly as much as SaGa Frontier. I miss the Sci-Fi setting.

There's also SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions. It is fantasy, so no guns or mechs, and you can only use Humans in your party, but it is a modern take on the series, it has 4 protagonist with variations and tons of recruits and the battle system is one of the best I've seen for turn-based RPGs.

Needless to say, the music is superb and I am 60 hours in and only finished 1 out of the 4 scenarios so you'll really get your money's worth.

After 100%ing this Remaster I had the fever for SaGa and Scarlet Grace is scratching that itch and more. It's gearing up to become one of my favorites. Highly recommended!

RS3 is an older game, the systems are a little stranger, but there's even more variation between the characters in the sense of what they get access to. Some characters get a sort of strategy game mode, Thomas owns his own company and has a buy/sell game that's like some of the Yakuza series stuff did later on, Sara specializes in "Commander" mode which is a sort of autobattle formation-based thing...
I still haven't beaten RS3 but it's kind of impressive how much there is to it considering it was a SNES game.

Yes Romancing SaGa 3 is a very good game and solidly worth it. I have both games on Nintendo Switch. Romancing SaGa 3 is very similar to SaGa Frontier so if you like SaGa Frontier it's a safe bet you'll like Romancing SaGa too.

All main characters can use "Commander mode", since it was the predecessor of the combo system which is surprising in a SNES game.

And for the question, this was one of the titles that are considered "tour de force", one of the last and best released by Square for SNES, along with FF VI, Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasure of Rudras, Seiken Densetsu 3, etc.

For its time it was very spectacular and with rarely seen mechanics, so if you don't like the 16-bit era, it may not be your game.

Still nobody specializes in it like Sara does. The reasons are spoilers but If you pick Sara you need to use commander mode.

RS3 focuses more on "waza" or weapon techniques as you have more varieties of weapon types such as short/medium/long sword, spear, bow, melee, axe, and staff. On the other hand, it has less spell than SF1.

RS3 one playthough is more soild and more contents/side quests than SF1, but 8 main characters play almost entirely the same with less variation than SF1. So to speak, one playthoung, RS3 > SF1, multiple main characters, RS3<SF1. You can possibly beat SF1 for one play in less than 10 hrs, but virtually impossible for RS3 without cheats as average play time is probably between 30-60 hrs.

SF1 is more innovative than RS3, but RS3 has less "rough around the edge" than SF1.

Personally I trained everyone to use every kind of magic in Romancing SaGa 3 on Switch, with New Game Plus especially. The main magics I preferred were Wind, Water, Sun and Moon.

You can only learn one elemental and one celestial magic type so IMO if you learn Sun you can't go wrong with Water or Earth whereas IMO moon pairs better with Fire and Wind (because of how this allows everyone to have decent healing magic and AoE spells at their disposal, plus buffs)

It can be really hard to train some characters in magic though.

ANY character with high enough magic skills can use magic well regardless of their core stats, but core character stats determine how easily characters gain progress in their magic schools.

So Muse for instance is very good at leveling up her magic skills, but Nora has a much harder time of it. They can both become masterful magic users, but Nora will always have a much harder time progressing in whatever magic she's using.

Incidentally there are weapon techs that are pretty much impossible to ever learn without the corresponding stats, so while Nora can be very strong with any melee weapon due to her beastly physical stats, Undine who only has 10 strength will pretty much never be good with clubs or axes, the best you can hope is that she might be good with a rapier.

I really like Earth+moon for smashing bosses. Since Undine is more gifted in earth than water, I switch her over ASAP and late game she just murders bosses with Shadow Servant+ Hypergravity. Combo that with a spear user with the legendary spear for buffing and 3 martial arts users and you can even take out the last bosses in a few turns on the 2nd or 3rd NG+.

Yeah earth pairs good with both Sun and Moon, I wouldn't recommend pairing Fire with Sun though because you need to be able to heal and there are some redundancies if you do. Then again I wouldn't recommend learning fire magic at all on account of how underwhelming it is compared to all the others.

Come to think of it Imma just say Earth with whatever, Wind with moon 100%, water with Sun because it's mostly redundant and wasted with moon but great support magic for Sun, and Fire just don't bother but if you do use Moon because you'll never use it with Sun anyway.
