I gotta say Asellus, Gen & Emelia! I'm really looking forward to this game being re-released.

Too hard for me to answer.

T260G was my first time playing the game so she's very close to my heart.

I love Asellus and Red, they are my favorite stories.

I also always take Gen, Annie and Rouge if they are available.

Lute's story is kind of bland but he is a god among men as a character and he is my brawler if I can't have Liza.

I really, really, like the designs of Emelia, Doll and Mesarthim and always try to use them if I can.

This game has an amazing cast.

EDIT: Also, T260G's Final Boss theme is straight up FIRE!

Asellus, T260G and Emelia I think.

But it's really hard to decide, I also really like Red, Gen...

Lute's not really that good of a character (gameplay-wise). He's a reasonably respectable brawler and that's something, but he's pretty much outclassed by every human character except Annie (who is awful) and Rouge (who is a mage) at overall combat skill. It says something that each of the original 7 heroes have a unique thing that makes them special, but Lute's special thing is that he can be taken out of party 1 so you don't have to use him in boss fights.

Annie's talent list is the worst among humans though by far, and in the original I tried to avoid going to Despair until I had a full roster to avoid getting her.

Playable, for me, is Asellus (also think she has the best story), Lute (I know he's bad at everything but I see the potential to become good at anything), and Blue (I also kind of like playing as Kung Blue, the Suplex Champion, just because it's a subversion of what the game clearly wants me to do, and I love that the devs let me)

Really? For me Lute alwas learns DSC very quickly (not as quickly as Liza, though)

And Annie always learns 2Gale Slash and Life Sprinkler as well as that sword tech that has a chance of insta kill normal enemies (Dead End?)

Maybe I am just so used to play the game that I don't feel they are terrible? I mean, I am not trying to argue here, you seem to clearly know more than I do but for me a Brawler with DSC and a Swordy with LifeSprinkler and 2GaleSlash are where is at.

Do you mind elaborating why are Annie and Lute trash?

You may have gotten DSC and Life Sprinkler and whatnot with Lute and Annie but most of the skills in the entire game, including the ones you got, are 0.02% chances to learn on them (maximum) unlike other characters who have really reasonable chances to learn them. That's called "talents" and Lute and Annie have the worst lists in the game. Of all characters. They are the bottom of the barrel.

I literally cannot think of another human that I would consider as "unusable" as those two. All of the others are worth -something- even if they aren't the best.

If you want to use Lute and Annie, stick them on Guns or Magic because talent doesn't matter on them. Which they have none.

Rouge is just considered "the best mage" because he starts talented in Realm Magic and starts with higher stats for casters. His "innate talent" at learning spells and "innate growth" is very minor compared to even the worst talents. Everyone can be a mage, and everyone can use a gun.

On the other hand, Gen and Liza are considered "top tier" because Gen learns EVERY SWORD SKILL that matters as a talent, and Liza learns EVERY FIGHTING SKILL that matters as a talent, minus Sliding, which is the only skill in the DSC she doesn't have a talent for. So spam Kicks to learn that 0.02% chance for Sliding until you get it.

Emelia's costume changes allows her to be talented in every Fighting move in the game except GoldHand btw, so she is actually the best to learn DSC.

Lute is a decent-ish fighting character, he's not bad and the fact you get him near the start with every character means you'll pretty much always use him and he'll probably always be fairly strong. IIRC he only has 2 DSC talents so he needs to succeed on 2 1/256 spark chances to learn it (but I could be wrong). However he has quite a few good key fighting talents and he's human, which means that he's always going to be reasonably useful.

Annie on the other hand has the literal worst talent list in the entire game and is only available for most characters halfway through the rune magic quest. It is almost never worth it to grind her to a useful level, except in Emelia's game where you get her early.

Liza is the undisputed best fighting character outside of Emelia's game, and Emelia is only better because she can copy Liza's spark list in Pink Tiger costume (plus get Sliding talent in her normal costume, making DSC easy).

I suppose there's an argument to be made that Red is a better fighter but really that's only in Alkaiser mode, and Red is kind of depressingly average outside of his transformation.

As for the best sword character, it sort of depends on what you value. Blouge is a competitor due to OD (it's not just for spells!), Asellus has the best statline of any character in the game and good sword talents, and Gen has the best sword talent list of any character, including Emelia in her own game. It's kind of telling that Gen is so good with swords that he can learn more skills and more useful/relevant skills than Emelia, Annie, and Liza *combined*

Although Asellus can easily cap her stats, Gen can still use LightSword and close the gap a bit, so Gen is probably still the best. He's unbelievably good.

I feel like, unless you are in Emelia or T260G's main scenario, it's optimal to have 2-3 Sword users, one of which is Gen. That said, if you have CombatMastery+PluralSlash on well-geared Mecs, you could even use Gen as a Martial user because he's only lacking Sliding spark like Liza as well. That means Emelia could reasonably have 3 DSC's without grinding...

I see. Thanks so much for the reply!

I guess I've always been lucky or grinded too much with Lute and Annie. It goes to show how good is this game that let's you pick whatever character and you can make them work for whatever style you want.

The remaster is hype, guys. I really want to see Fuse's story!
