Ok, having a lot of trouble drifting
No matter what I do I spin out. Is there a specific button combination? Whether I e-brake or brake, or both, turning into the direction or whatever, the car just spins in circles while still just going forward.

Isn't the point of drifting to turn?

The car rotates its position, but I don't actually turn, instead I'm driving in the same direction, but broadside first. ITs super weird. I can't actually go around a corner. I just keep going straight, its just the car is oriented different.

I know a lot of people say this is important, but I think the peculiarities of which car you drift best with requires the player to have the technique down in the first place.

Either there's something wrong with my settings, my technique, or both, but I can't even get anywhere close to a drift. Until that happens, I don't think the type of car I'm using is going to be relevant in the conversation...

well good luck then

Type of car is important, because weight distribution is what makes or breaks drifting cars. Front engine are easiest to drift in, while mid and rear engine take a lot more practice, because you effectively slide heavy part of car and steer with light one.
Also purpose built drift cars are much harder to control, because of metric F-ton of power and limited grip. Start with unmodded cars, and once you get hang of them move to more powerful builds. Learn to walk, before trying to run.

Turn left to go right.

Yeh I just feel like I can't even walk right now, is all.

I still don't understand, can someone help me?

There are three breaks. Left trigger, left bumper, and the A button.

The A button spins me out, the left trigger rotates the car, and the left trigger just stops me altogether.

The left trigger doesn't let me maneuver left or right. I can't go in my intended direction with the bumper even when the front of the car is pointed that way.

So I feel like none of the break buttons actually do anything unless I want a nice cute, slow, break at 15 miles an hour.

If I press A to spin the car, and then left trigger I just stop altogether with the side of my car facing an odd direction.

If I press A to spin, then left bumper, the car just slides and doesn't change from going straight into the direction I want to go.

If I press the bumper, and then the A button, I rotate the car, then just spin out.

I don't understand why there are three separate break buttons.

It helps if you crashed cars before in real life
knowing what not to do when drifting

ok thank you but I need to know how to do this in terms of which buttons to press. using specific car terms doesn't translate well into the game unless you're already familiar with how the game works. which I'm not.

I can't place higher than 8th in any race because I can't drift. Doing nice little turns prevents me from being able to corner and pass cars up effectively.

and before we get into overtaking cars, I still need to know how to drift.

I need advice in terms of button pressing, please.

look it up on youtube, there are easy to understad tutorials for drifting in fh4

Those aren't really helping. Its just like "find the right angle, turn into the line, then exit at the right angle" conceptual stuff. That doesn't help. I need button pressing advice. Which buttons do I press to actually drift, instead of sliding around?

Drifting is all about feel, understanding weight transfer, oversteer and correct counter-steer/throttle control. I am far from being good at it, because I've always thought that although it looks cool, having it as it's own motorsports discipline is kinda silly.

But it is fun when you know how to do it, if you're not racing seriously. Start with a stock, mildly powered rear wheel drive car. Any base muscle car like an old Mustang, or a basic sports/economy car like a Silvia, or a classic RWD compact like a Ford Escort 1600 are great to understand the basics. Just make sure you install the 1:5 Limit Slip differential to let the tires a bit looser with some control. Welded diffs come after.

Like in any circumstance, it's all about practice and knowing how to balance your inputs. The more gas, the more countersteer you'll apply and the more quicker you let the rear loose, the quicker you have to react. Know when the car is about to snap back and bite, and straighten the steering before it happens, or apply more gas to maintain the drift. Sometimes some trailbraking helps. In some cases a good clutch kick will also help.

If you're spinning out, you are applying too much throttle with not enough countersteering, or you are exceeding the limits of the car by going in too aggressive. Analog controllers are a must. There is no full gas/no gas, full steer lock situation that will help you with drifting. It all has to be smooth and progressive.

I know a lot of people dis on wheels for Forza, but man, I can't stress enough how much easier they make the game once you get a feel for it. Plus, it's hella fun! This game does an incredible job at simulating oversteer, understeer, sudden grip bite and weight transfer, despite it is not even close to more sophisticated simulators.

I remember having lots of fun on Forza 2 for the 360. I had custom setup that worked well for me, and everything was great.

Now, its like I turn at all I spin out. I've spent, oh man, uh...9 hours now watching and reading tutorials and videos on drifting, changing the car setup, retesting, and I've had zero progress at all.

At the moment, I'm driving on a gravel road in the starter G/T for some match, I can't change the car, and I can't go more than 25 mph without spinning out of control and driving off a cliff into a house.
