Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon 4

On launch, FH4 hangs on splashscreen, consumes all system RAM ??
Does anyone have insight into how to fix this issue? I've seen it reported by a large bunch of people, but I've not seen a solution for it that I've been able to try posted anywhere.

My PC is an AMD 7700X with 64 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080, running Windows 11. I've installed the latest Nvidia graphics driver.

When I launch FH4, this happens:

After launching the game, the Forza Horizon 4 splashscreen displays, but the game doesn't load from there. The splashscreen stays on the screen, while the amount of RAM Forza Horizon 4 is consuming rapidly increases (shown by Task Manager), and will shortly consume all of my 64 GB of system RAM, unless I force-close the program. If I don't force-stop it, it eventually freezes my entire PC.

Here's a video of it in action:

I asked this question on Reddit, and I got this response:

Its a bug i just reported to Forza support but i don't know if they ever will fix this.

If you have two GPUs in your system the system just forces the first GPU to start the game on. In this case it would be your 7700X integrated graphics. To temporary fix this, remove the AMD Driver in device manager. The game should start with no problem. Also if you plug in your monitor into the iGPUs HDMI/DP Port the iGPU Forza is starting without any problem because that is the GPU it wanted to start on, but then the performance is trash obviously. On FH5 the problem is not there. I had this problem since i upgraded from 5950x (no iGPU) to 7950X3D (iGPU). It just ignores the main display in windows.

That sounds promising, but I couldn't find anywhere that I could disable or remove the iGPU in Device Manager. So, I haven't been able to try this suggestion.

Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening, and how to fix it?

Literally the video you have shown was what happened to me, at the end of waiting a few minutes FH4 closed along with Steam.
Try deleting a file inside the ForzaHorizon4 folder called TargetHardwareProfiler.dll
Just by doing that the error was solved.

I've turned off iGPU in the BIOS.

Then I ran https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-601.html

This fixed the issue for me.

Thanks for the quick replies. If I'd been able to solve this the last time I bought FH4, I wouldn't have returned it. But then I also wouldn't have gotten to buy the Ultimate edition now for the price I paid for the base game previously.

It looks like my particular X670E motherboard's BIOS doesn't currently have an option to disable the iGPU, but deleting the TargetHardwareProfiler.dll file in the FH4 installation folder solved it. Awesome.

Playground Games previously told me, and other people, that they were looking into this issue. That was a long time ago, but it's never been patched. So, either they weren't honest in saying they were looking into it, or they didn't discover what was causing it. Since it has an easy fix, I'm going to message them with it, and I hope that they'll patch it before FH4 is delisted from Steam. This issue affects a lot of people.
