The feeling and control is very good for me with those settings.
Forza is a sim-cade game, a mix between simulation and arcade, so i'd say its more designed to have fun so dont force yourself. if you want a challenge, pure simulation, crash and retry then there are plenty of other games for this =)
Braking: ABS On
Traction control: On
Stability control: Off
Shifting: Manual (no clutch)
Driving Line: Braking only
Damage & Tire Wear: None
Rewind: On
Thank goodness for choice! Other games may not exactly follow FH for difficulty effects, so tailor as needed.
TC & SC off (I do a lot of drifting)
Manual no clutch
Full line
Cosmetic damage
Rewind on
That reminds me, I did once hear that drifting should be done with both traction and stability control disabled. I wonder if the Caterham cars would be better or even worse without those aids… 🙄
As for the clutch, isn’t that supposed to make certain kinds of competitive PC driving easier?
- ABS - On. I've tried and have played other racing games with ABS off, personally I prefer it off for track oriented racing games like Gran Turismo or the Forza Motorsport series (haven't played those yet) where I have all aids off. Street type racing/car games I like it on but I guess I can turn it off, I have no issue with doing so. Varies between games I guess.
- Steering - Simulation. Tried normal, was alright I guess, idk I prefer Simulation. Maybe I'll give Normal a try at some point.
- TC - Off. Burnouts, drifting, my IRL car (2011 P7B Police Interceptor) has no TC so I like to mimic that. Also just more fun and more control. Turned off across all racing games I play.
- ESC (Electronic Stab. Control) - Off. Same reason as TC, more fun more control. Turned off across most if not all racing games I play.
- Shifting - Manual. Pretty much mandatory for me unless the game doesn't have it. The layout however is not quite consistent across my racing games but that is unrelated. Clutch is optional and really just depends on if I can find an appropriate layout, usually turned off however but I think there is one racing game where I do have clutch enabled. CarX Drifting Racing I think? Not opposed to clutch, just can't be bothered to find a key layout that fits me since I play with controller. Manual + Clutch also allows for launch control. That used to be a thing with regular manual but I tried and can't seem to get it to work, seems to be broken. So if I WANT to use launch control, I might turn on clutch and rebind a key or something, but I can't be bothered with clutch and finding a decent key to use so I keep it off. Also I hate how the shift points for the automatic in this game doesn't shift up under "regular" driving. Seems to only shift at redline. Big turn off for me.
- Driving Line - off. I don't need it. In some cases I found it to be a hindrance (Turned it on for Glen Rannoch drift zone during winter season, was completely useless). Turned off across all racing games I play.
- Damage & Tire Wear - None. Want a casual racing experience in this game. Like my car nice and pretty. Don't mind it being dirty tho.
- Rewind - On/Off. I use both but currently I have it on. Early on I found I never really used it much, so I kept it off for more credits. I'd rather just accept that I messed up and either restart entirely, or carry on from where I messed up. But now I use it more often than not, no shame in rewinding after a crash or bad corner, better to rewind that mess up and restart a zone for Forzathon Lives plus credits don't quite matter to me anymore so. Doesn't hurt to have it on. If you don't want to use it, don't use it. Also when I'm playing offline, great for replays and photos I guess. Can't use rewind and go photomode online from my experience.
Just like with IRL, anything that involves your tires breaking traction like drifting and doing some sick skids, or doing burnouts you need to have TC/SC off since they are safety measures that exist so you DON'T break traction or "lose control". Unless you're me and you own and drive something old like a 2011 P7B Crown Vic Police Interceptor where none of this comes with the car, safety be damned, nothing like squeaking the tires a little at the green light and being able to flip the car 180 and doing fun cop car stuff. Anyway It would probably be better because its not cutting the power and being intrusive every time you throw it sideways? No idea, never tried with that car.
The only thing I know is that, with clutch, you can use launch control. I've seen people mention how launch control used to work with "manual no clutch" but it seems to be broken for me (and others maybe?), so if I want to use launch control, clutch is required. But because I'm playing with controller, I can't be bothered to figure out where to map my clutch that is comfortable for me. Outside of that, no idea.
Traction control: On
Stability control: Off
Shifting: Auto (I'm only playing to relax now... feeling lazy to use manual)
Driving Line: Braking only
Damage & Tire Wear: Cosmetic
Rewind: On
Works for me most of The Trials and good enough to destroy Drivatars on Expert, and good enough to beat consistently Unbeatable ones with my favourite cars. Note I hate drifting stuff, and I turn TC off when I need to do so (mostly Forzathons).
And I'm now playing around with the stock Catherham on road races (no AWD, No race parts, nothing). It's fun to drive now that I got the hang of it. Hard to say why but when I drive RWDs in 1st person view I drive it better, somehow it gives me a much better idea how to counter-steer it well. Perhaps because I have a more clear idea how the wheels and body are aligned based on its motion...
easy or difficult you want the game to be.
