You need to keep the in game radio playing. It can't be set to off (the radio selector, pick a station, do not pick OFF). You can however, turn down the music volume, so you can't HEAR the music.
So play the game in freeroam. I am pretty sure it does not kick in during races, ever. Nor does it work on blueprints.
Randomly it kicks it. There is an icon on screen. If the music is not muted and you keep the dj's on, they actually announce when you have a skill song. I think. I know they announce it in 5. And I'm like 90% positive in fh4 they announce it too.
Depending on the song, it's between 2 to 7 minutes.
I heard a rumor that the Classic music station has the longest skill song. Not sure if that is only on FH5 though.
TLDR: Keep the radio on. Even if you turn volume down. Wait for it to kick in randomly during freeroam. Profit.
Because you can get more skills in free roam. A LOT more. The song would be pointless during a race.
A little tip, during a race, keep your radio on. Once the race is over, a skill song will be guaranteed to play. Then just go drive in the highway the wrong way and skill combos will rain on you.
Skill songs are about other things. Drifting, air, destruction. Fun stuff that isn't just racing. Yes you get skills during races. But you also can lose a chain from hitting a racer, and things like that.
Skill songs during races would actually annoy a lot of players. Because during a race you are NOT trying to skill chain. They are not 100% compatible playstyles.
You can alternate though, its a ton of fun. Give it a try.
Skill songs give you up to 10x multiplier on your skill streaks instead of 5x, so effectively double your skill scores
Some additional tips:
There are cars that can unlock a standard max skill multiplier of 6 instead of 5 and some even 7 (during a skill song you can only get a max multiplier of 10x though)
Moga CMDR was right, the classical music station Timeless contains the longest songs, I regularly had skill songs play for around 10 minutes.
One of the best locations to do stunts during a skill song is the dunes of the beach behind Bamburgh Castle on the east of the map. The constant flow of drifting, air and destructions skills you can combine there will easily keep your skillchain going. Be careful though, best to hit those dunes straight for a jump, doing it sideways can get you to roll over and lose all your points, even with the extra life perk enabled.
There is a maximum of 10 skill points you can obtain at once (when you reach a skill score of 480.000). Once the skill score is about to hit that number, stop the car for a moment and let it collect the skill points before you continue. So in cars with the regular 5x max multiplier make sure you stop the skillchain at around 100.000 x5 (and 50.000 x10 during a skill song).
IIRC unfortunately not, the 7x cars will only go to 10x
I have almost 400h in this game, purchased all the houses, never seen this but did not play for several months....
