Long story short: When Missile Command: Recharged was first released in 2020, it was as a general pilot for the Recharged project, and looking back at it, we've come quite far since then. We were just not truly happy with calling Missile Command: Recharged the best remake we could make for the original game, and so we decided to go back and revisit it.
The new game comes with a new soundtrack, better gameplay, gamemodes, challenges, and many of the things added to the more recent Recharged games that has come out since.
Of course, this will also amount to a higher price than the first "test game," but anyone who owns Missile Command: Recharged now before release of the second version will get the original remake's price in reduction. So anyone currently owning Missile Command: Recharged can get the new version of the game for $3 off!
And though the old version of Missile Command: Recharged has now been taken off the store, you can still continue to play it after V2 comes out on Nov 1st if you want!
I hope that brought some clarity to the situation. We get it can be a bit confusing - I initially found it confusing myself, heh.
All the best to you!
Even though you are calling it a new game, I really believe that owners of the original recharged version, should get a discount. We bought the original recharged game in good faith after all. Also, if this is under the same recharged project, it's certainly the same game.. It almost sounds like you're saying that the first game was a test. If that's the case you really shouldn't charge money for a test, that's called a beta. Unless I'm confuseed, the name of the old game and the new game are exactly the same.
So what it sounds like to me is, you released the original version and you weren't happy with it. So now we have a new version that we have to pay for....again. With all due respect, it is not your customer's fault that you weren't happy with the game. Developers really should not do this, it is called double dipping your customers and it is very frowned upon. I've actually changed my opinion now and I think that customers that bought the original version should get the new version for free or if not free, at least at a very high discount.
I loved all of the Atari games and have also bought the arcade versions of the original games on Steam, that are in this recharge project.
Meaning that I bought the arcade versions of Asteroids, Centipede, Break Out, Missile Command and Grravitar.
I will say If you do another recharged game, it should be Tempest.
EDIT:
Wow. I keep rereading your post and it gets worse and worse. You even admit that the original version was a test version.
I don't think I will be buying any more of your recharged games. I was really excited when I saw Centipede and Asteroids. However, I don't like being charged money for test versions of games.
???
Profit Customers scummed
Nobody is taking the original away from your library and you are getting 100% of your money put towards owning the new release. If it were me, I'd discount the original by half ($5) as a reward for early support but nobody's getting ripped off here. The original $3 sounds about the right price for a test version, and the game also went on sale several times.
I'm not in the habit of paying for betas and really the only time you do that is when you are pre-ordering and you get access. That didn't happen here.
EDIT:
You can also check, they certainly didn't market the old version as a "test" version. Most likely because had they done so, they wouldn't have sold a copy.
By the way, I appreciate the devs' honesty on the subject.
I remember when the game was released and it certainly didn't say test anywhere. It wasn't a complete game. Once again, he admitted to it
I'm not sure why you're trying to justify this by the low price of the game either.
Yeah it's honest, does it still leave a bad taste? Yes.
Like I said, you don't pay for test versions. That's just another word for beta.
EDIT
Also as far as getting what you pay for is far as prize is a really silly argument.
Look at the game Vampire Survivors, game started out at $2.99 and got tons of updates.
It's now $4.99 and they didn't scrap the game and start over and make another one. And Atari has vastly more money at their disposal than the Vampire Survivors devs do.
Since then, they've found success with other Recharged games (with bigger budgets and charged appropriately) and they want to come back to their first title and give it the appropriate treatment but that work isn't free. Like I said, it'd be nice if they gave a 50% discount for original owners but just offering a discount of the original game's price is enough for me to not have a problem.
At the end of the day, we're all paying $10 (or less) for a $10 game, just either broken up into two payments ($3 and then $7), or one payment of $10.
Got me hooked on the other Recharge titles and got them on Steam and Xbox so a lot of investment here. Also wanted some mouse/trackball support on the serie in general.
Now its obsoleat and I need to pay for it again! Don't like it!
Did earlier read that this was to be an free update for present owners of this title, but not even a discount is a sad move! What about SteamDeck and trackball support, why pay for it once again?
That being said, though I can see it hasn't been put in place yet (which is likely our error - someone might've forgotten to press a button or something), there will be a $3 discount on the second game for owners of the first one. We have no intention of having our players pay full price for a game they already own the first version of.
We understand the frustration when it looks like we're trying to put on a trick for our players, and that has certainly never been the idea, so until it is fixed and the discount is in place, we can only ask for your patience, and we apologise deeply for the inconvenience.
You realise how that sounds right?
EDIT 1:
After reading more of the thread it appears you never even considered supporting those who supported you during the first release (bar an insulting $3 discount), so I will now be turning my back on the series and you as a developer, planned to get them all eventually, not anymore.
The industry needs to be better than this, we're not dollar signs, we're people with opinions and influence, and I'll be using mine to spread the word.
Edit 2:
For what it's worth, I still see no discount in my store. If it was a timed thing, then apparently fans who only just learned of the new version are shafted either way.
"We have no intention of having our players pay full price for a game they already own the first version of."
Obviously a lie, as less than 2 weeks after launch I'm already forced to.
