Most people will unlock the planet with a space cube and leave it unlocked. But now that we have pool thinning through banishing cards, it is actually more efficient to be able to banish the planet altogether with one time cube, rather than having the pool diluted with 2 different cards. Hopefully then buff the turret planet, or even better, make it's placement random so it could potentially have interesting use cases. A third option would be to consolidate the 2 cards into one, but given they are 2 different upgrade paths on the upgrade screen that seems unlikely.
I do think there is a point where the planet is useful, but in the long run it's better to not have it and get access to better cards. Same could possibly be said about other planets, but I actually use the other ones.
Yes, to unlock Luna you'll need to max out the turret planet at some point, but you only have to do this once.
What I'm talking about is spending a space cube to have the planet unlocked from the start of a run. If you do this you'll add 2 cards to the pool, one for turrets and one for damage per turret. By not unlocking the planet you can banish the planet from the pool with one time cube. As Compass said, you can achieve the same result by fully upgrading the plasma planet on the upgrade screen.
The point here about how to best use the new banish system, and since the turret planet is one of the weaker aspects of the game, it's best to take it off the table altogether, IMO. I mentioned it because it may not be obvious, especially since most people will unlock the planet early and may forget that the can undo the upgrade later.
I hope I'm explaining that well enough.
