favorite spell?
curious what everyone's favorite spell is? monster traits/gem enhancements/ whatever else included since they can make such a massive difference to spell performance.

personally I'm not very far into the game yet (only about floor 20) but my favorite is shellbust. at it's base it reduces enemy defense, then deals damage equivalent to the amount of defense lost. That isn't too huge on it's own, but what really breaks it is my creature. You see, I have this creature set up as a huge hp tank. Aside from just being naturally tanky, it has a relic trait that converts 50% of it's stats into max hp at the start of battle, and a character trait that adds extra damage to spells and attacks based on current hp vs enemy current hp. I also have a number of peripheral and character traits that add up to return any living creature to full hp every time they take a turn. So my creature's current hp is always full when it acts.

But wait there's more. I added hp scaling and hitting an extra target to the gem. Which means the armor shred and resulting damage both scale off of my creatures monstrously high max hp, in addition to the damage also getting an extra bonus from my monster's hp trait.

So how it ends up working out is that my monster casts the spell on two targets. If they're weak or squishy to even the smallest degree, then they're just straight up dead, because the difference between their hp and my guys hp is too large, and his hp damage trait kills them. If they're tanky then more armor gets shredded because the spell seems to be scaled somewhat to the enemy armor number. more armor shredded means more damage, and then my guy's hp damage bonus kicks in. It basically one-shots anything it hits, and it hits two enemies every turn thanks to the upgrade

For what it's worth, stats can't be drained below 20% of base by stuff like that. So the actual Shellbust portion will scale to their defense until and unless they have enough to still be above that.

These aren't necessarily my favorite but are in my opinion the best spells in the game. Wormhole and Greater Dispel. Generous Greater dispel should be in every party. Wormhole is amazing for swapping from your support creatures to your carry giving the carry multiple turns per rotation. it is also good against enemies with rotating conditions or turn counters like Flubris.

This is going to take an explanation and its VERY party specific but its reincarnation.

It relies on a few things but here's the summary. 1 of my creatures has Dark Embrace trait fused with Abomination. What this combination does (on the same creature) is when another creature dies it sucks up their stats and shares a portion of the gained with the party. I use the avatar with the trait Marigold which makes stats not have a diminishing return now (I can billions of stat boost now in a long battle, its unreal) and have 2 major anointment that make this the crowning jewel of spells: Never forgotten, which makes stats gains persist through death, and Eternal Damnation which makes all my creatures deal 10% more dmg for each death my party's creatures have had. On the creature I manually kill they have a nether stone with empowered death siphon. That spell normally kills party target but this prevents that and they gain ALL their stats. Also on the one I kill when they die they attack 5 random enemies and another trait makes them attack 3 more times when revived.

So on my reincarnate spell I have it cast 2 times. This makes that creature attack 16 times! The limit is 15 attacks so room for a miss in there should they not die somehow. Then? They ALL gain stats from the death. And that creature sucks up even MORE stats with the augmented death syhon. Next creature also has that same spell I cast on the same creature. He usually gets an extra few BILLION attack stat and kills even the hardest false gods in like 2 of those casting. Also I am a necromancer so I have like 20 zombies attacking stuff lol

Yup. there are loads of combos in this game.

At end game its pretty nice to get a team going that can just beat everything in one turn due to infinite scaling methods of dealing damage and whatnot.
Personally, I'm not much a fan of any combos that rely on stats or anything that takes forever for turns to resolve. Best bet IMO is to just kill everything instantly and move on :P

So i am going to rephrase the OPs question to "what are spells that you should frequently consider for generous spellgems, regardless of your party/spec" (mostly because i want this list...)

Greater dispell - remove all enemy buffs and your debuffs, WHY NOT!!!!
Archangels blessing - heals your party for a non-int based amount and gives em a buff
Astral Dimension - unseal all your creatures spellgems and it cannot be sealed
Contagion - swap all enemies minions for a debuff on them instead
Blitz howl - I am breaking the rules here because it cannot be made generous, but if you can do the same thing via a trait... yup.... (inner destruction same.)
clayman + the bloody knife - stupid max HP scaling, yup please.

I'll add recharge to this list because if you want to have infinite gem casts without spending artifact slots or creature traits on it, you can spend one of your creature's gem slots to hand out a generous recharge instead. (recharges 3 charges for each gem when cast)
