Artefact Spell Slot
How does this actually work?

I socketed Lightning storm into the artefact but now I cant seem to find out what properties I put on it before I did so.

Also Lightning storm seems to cast now and then - is it subject to charge reduction?

I socketed it into my Ent who has a 35% chance to cast necrosis whenever my other creatures attack - Lightning storm seems to follow this quite a lot.

What are the best type of gems to socket and what modifiers?

My army consists of a fast character spamming Infernal charge on my Centaur (who benefits from lots of auto spells cast) who has a 70% splash damage to all - usually wipes turn 1, If anything does survive I have a mega-tank who provokes and adds tons of stats to all + cleric specialisation which adds tons of buffs.

Is it only direct damage spells with increase damage mods that are best for the artefact and if so is it the low charge big nukes?

Spell gems do not benefit from their modifiers, while socketed.
Keep in mind that a spell socketed in an artifact will only be cast, if a certain action (depending on the type of artifact) was taken by the bearer.
For reference:

Sword - chance to cast on attacking with your creature
Shield - chance to cast on defending with your creature
Helmet - chance to cast on provoking with your creature
Boots - chance to cast on dodging with your creature at the start of your creatures' turn
Staff - chance to cast on casting with your creature (does not stack with itself)

The best type of spell gems to socket depends on you setup. In your case, you may benefit from spells that speed up your buff gain (Flame Lash, Spell Ward, Nourish, etc.).
A lot of times it is best to socket utility spells, which do not depend on spell potency for their effect, since you don't have to worry about the casters intelligence or other effects that influence a spells strength.

As an example, my cheesy Siegemaster build benefits from being attacked and provoking, so I socketed the spell 'Duel' into each of my creatures' artifacts. My lineup isn't very adept at casting spells, but it doesn't matter, since 'Duel' just does what it does without needing a powerful caster.

Noticed a little mistake I made concerning Boots after checking the codex again. I edited my post accordingly.

quick (related ) question:

So if I socket "Dark Ritual" into sword is this going to kill my target or my character - if it kills enemy it would be OP as hell - instant kill with 100% stat steal of attack/speed and all buffs

From what I've experienced so far, it will most likely kill one of your creatures.

Dark Ritual can only be casted on your own creatures and the artifact version will do the same. They always choose appropriate targets. So if you put a heal in your artifact you will not heal your enemies.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
