If a unit with an emotion shard dies, do you lose the shard?

No, the shard is placed back into your inventory. There is no risk to equipping everyone who can benefit from a shard with one - even certain backline units!

Also as a PSA - the Sovereign Shard of Nevendaar from the Deluxe Edition can be equipped on a backline unit and still receive the benefit, I kept mine on Avyanna until Act III thinking only she could use it~
