It's closer to King's Bounty than HoMaM, i.e., it's an RPG, not a strategy game. Also, the combat system is excruciatingly slow - The fastest settings are like HoMaM 3 but with standard animation speed. You'll spend about half your time in the entire game just waiting for combat animations to finish.

That's like, not what Viper asked for :D Try it and see if you like it. Regarding your question I'd say it's HOMM-ish with the combat, but it's definitely more leaned towards an RPG. Or let me rephrase; It has HOMM elements, but it's not truly HOMM. I haven't played the other Disciples games much since I don't like that kind of graphic, but I generally wouldn't compare it to any other game either way. After 2 hours, if your first impression really is that it's not your kind of game, you can still refund it. Before that I'd suggest going at it without much prejudice.
