Can you actually be good in this game?
I've tried playing the demo, doing a chunk of the empire starting zone until I met the high priest. Well, I'm now notorious with the empire, which I had assumed was one of the "good" factions. Not being in support of Spanish Inquisition style torturing of innocents seems to doom me to a negative rating with them. So much for that idea. I expect the undead/devils factions to be evil. So that leaves me with the xenophobic elves. This isn't looking promising.
Are all the factions basically evil? I mean I saw the post that none of them are *entirely* evil, but that's a long ways from any of them supporting being a good hero. If I have to gain faction with them to get their high level units, and I have to do/support evil things to gain faction, then this probably isn't the game for me. I don't need to be a jedi/paladin/paragon all the time, but so far my choices have been "support kidnapping and brainwashing or lose faction," "support torture by the veil or lose faction," or "slaughter rebels who oppose the religious fanatics or lose faction."
Is it all like this? Or is the demo a particularly dark slice of things?

There are no good guys here.

It's the standard "dark fantasy" setting of eurojank writers.

They are in love with the "everyone sucks and the world is crap" trope, everything they write seems to come out straight of a 14yo brooding teen imagination.

I've been pretty much conditioned to read any media that describes itself as "dark", "mature" and "full of consequences" as trite aimed for teenagers that believe themselves to be oh-so-adult, and this game is just one more to the pile.

At least the gameplay here is decent enough that you can just ignore the mediocre writing and still have fun with it.

Disciples has always been an "everyone is a ♥♥♥♥" setting. The backstory is literally that the two most good-aligned gods were treated like such dirt and betrayed so terribly that they turned into the gods of the demons and undead.

That said, Liberation is really quirky with the writing. It's somewhere between grimdark and whimsical.

Nah, it's not written in a depressing way, at least as far as I could see.

The game doesn't try to put a lot of emotional weight on anything, which is probably for the better.

It's has a bit of a "dark comedy" kinda of writing at times, which are the best bits in this game for me. I feel like they should probably have fully embraced that genre.

The undead area was surprisingly funny in that way and is my favorite region so far.

Heh. I could see it being a fun twist that the undead are really the good guys. But it doesn't sound like they went that route. Oh well. Not my taste but variety is a good thing. Thanks for the info!

Life doesn't normally allow anybody to be an idealistic good person, there will be constraints , compromises and sacrifices made to get anywhere you want. Nothing is for free, even breathing, and I like that the choices and the story in general reflects that. I never liked those games much that are designed for quick self-gratification without much challenge.
