Low to no damage

Apologies if this has been raised before, I did search for some key words but didn't find anything that matched the description of the bug I have been encountering.

A brief description of the issue:
Essentially while playing in Co-op with my friend who is hosting the game, I (the person who is joining the game) will encounter a bug which will continuously reduce any damage, the reduction in damage can happen between sectors or even during an encounter, I eventually do no damage to anything and are unable to participate in the run.

This doesn't usually happen early on in a run; I've noted at the start of a run I will do 6 damage with a cannon however across multiple sector/map movements I eventually do no damage once we hit the third boss. More notably the latest run I saw the damage reduction from 6 to 2 damage at the beginning of the third map (The Edge).

This hasn't happened in a solo game.

The steps required to recreate the issue:
I haven't been able to find conclusive evidence of what causes the bug, at first, I thought it may be an issue with the Shelby character and trinkets which provide additional damage, however the same occurred when playing Krillstoph recently, I did have a few damage increasing trinkets.

Any attempts to work around the issue, if applicable
My friend and I attempted to switch trinkets with each other in hopes of fixing it however this didn't help, the first time it occurred I gave any trinkets I had to my friend and after a few map movements (and a boss) it seemed to rectify the issue, however shortly after it happened again.

Have you spammed changing characters at all?
This has been noticed to occur when doing so so we wonder whether this has happened.

It's likely that this is the case, we are both new starters to the game and have been unlocking characters during some of the runs.. the most recent run where the issue was experienced I recall unlocking Betty (at a really inopportune time during a boss fight) and ended up accidentally switching back and forth between the character a few times in a panic.
