How to pause/resume mid run?

A single run in this game can easily hit an hour.

I can't just play video games as long as I want, whenever...

So if I'm in the middle of a run, I'd like to be able to quit the game for now, and then load back in again later.

When I pause the game during a run, the menu has a "give up" and a "return to menu" option.
But both seem to do the same thing: force you out of the run.

So next time I load into the game, I'm back on the lighthouse island and have to start fresh.

Can there please be a way to continue from where you left off instead of always restarting?

Seconded, it would be good to be able to save at least when you're on the map view.

I'm afraid we can't pause this game unless we leave it running on the screen and resume the game later.

This is all the more problematic when you attack endless mode.
I must have lost on purpose having gone well over 2 hours of play and having to leave the computer. :(
