Pufferfish.
How the hell do you fight these waves of 5-8 pufferfish? They take an awful lot of shots, and they blow away all your hp.. and you have to fight several waves at times.. Honestly decent game, but these guys are literal brick wall run killers

pufferfish wouldn't be so bad if there was a decent limit to the amount of damage they could do at once, I've had a ship lose more then four health in just a moment because of pufferfish.

me and my gf were playing just yesterday, and there was literally 8 waves of like a dozen puffer fish alternating from one side to the other.. we survived but only because we had bombs! But for an RNG game, this kind of things is unacceptable. You should reasonably be able to overcome most adversities without needing exceedingly powerful gear.

If you play the game a bit longer you will notice that there is only a certain number of possible enemy groups and when you see the first long line of exploding fish you know there will be more. They come from alternating sides of the ship, 8 waves should be the maximum iirc.

To answer the question how to beat them: Kill any one of them. Aim for one, it will blow up and take all of the others with it. If your weapons are too weak to kill a puffer fish before it is so close that it damages your ship your run was probably going to fail anyways.
Acknowledge that these fish are the single most dangerous enemy in this kind of encounter and get ready to deal with them. Put a cannon on both sides of the boat or, if you are playing solo, switch the cannon to the other side of the boat and load it up as soon as the first fish explodes.

They may have gotten you once or twice now and I understand that you are angry to have lost in this way but I don't think you will be killed by them again.
I like those waves, to be honest, they represent a large number of enemies that you can kill very quickly which, given the right items, can net you a lot of gold.

Oh, and, get ready to encounter these fish but with a bit more health again during the final encounter of your run!
if you have sniper charge it up and shoot one pufferfish it will kill them all because chain reaction

Functionally you just have to kill one. The rest should blow up with it, since their explosions hurt their friends too.

It's a good idea to try and get and hold on to a bomb of any kind for quick moments like the pufferfish.

I think Pufferfish need to have a permanent resonance debuff, because if they accidentally break their own chain, they become multiple flanks that need to be taken out all at once.
Either that, or limit their maximum HP.

Pufferfish aren't actually hard to beat once you know how, however this is also the basic strategy for winning the game so SPOILER ALERT -

you need to play as aggressive as possible - collect as many trinkets/artifacts/ammo as possible, especially trinkets cause they don't take up space and especially in forgotten waters cause it's the easiest. don't rush to the boss, pass through as many tiles as you can. the only exception is if you're really low on some specific resource, then collect that instead. by the time you reach pufferfish (and any other enemy for that matter) you will almost surely have enough fire power to wipe most of them out before they hurt you. of course, you still need to shoot at them yourself, don't wait for the sentries to do it.
If some of them still manage to get close, you can knock them back with the paddle. that doesn't always work and it takes some sense of timing, practice it a bit and you will get it.

Just kill one pufferfish and the rest will be killed by the explosions. Focus together on one pufferfish

The real enemies are the bone serpents that can spawn close to you, bite you and throw spread fire with little warning and even if you kill them.

The fire from the bone serpents appears when you kill them. It is not random, you just need to be ready for it when killing one.
true, but still hard if your autocannon kills one, or you need to disengage from your manual cannon.
