Crackling in audio under VMware Player 13, Windows 10, on macOS Ventura

I recently upgraded to macOS Ventura, and installed VMware Player 13. When I run GR 1 under Windows 10, everything seems fine at first: the intro music is clear and lovely. However, once the game starts, there's a constant crackling noise that interrupts the background music and other effects. I've tried reinstalling the VMware audio drivers, updating Windows, verifying the Steam files, all the usual things. Anyone else encounter this?

This did *not* happen under VMware 12, so I may just have to try downgrading to see if that fixes the problem. Nonetheless, no other app I've tried has this problem. I'll also have to try other games and see if they suffer the same issue.

Okay, I've tried both GRIS and The Mensional, and neither of these exhibits the same problem; audio for both is perfect. So it seems to be something to do with the audio library calls being made within the game (rather than in the surrounding intro, etc).
