The Beginning of the End. Gwent in 2023 and Beyond.
For those that didn't catch CDPR's 2023 roadmap discussion for Gwent after World Masters #4 there are some very big and significant changes coming to Gwent. I'll bullet point all the most important changes below or you can watch it yourself (featuring Thor Serpent and Burza...who's sadly leaving) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EsTFtuDT2k

This is the future of Gwent for 2023 and beyond.

  • No new Journeys.
  • Premium tokens, but only 20 of them at first.
  • 72 new cards for 2023 in three separate drops: April, June and September.
  • No more new cards after 2023.
  • Gwent World Masters #5 will be the last and final esport competition for Pros.
  • Progression system changes including new quests, rewards and achievements.
  • Possible new version of Draft because the current one is too difficult to update.
  • Continued technical support (i.e. server maintenance) for the foreseeable future.
  • Continued monthly balance changes until 2024.
  • Player driven balance changes from 2024 and onward.

Note: Player driven balance changes will only effect the power and provision costs of cards and it may likely be gated behind Prestige level to stop it turning into a Reddit style pepegafest.

I'm kinda sad Zoltan is never getting his own Journey.

Sadly they officially declined the deadline for Gwent
2023 will be the last year to get new content and e-sports event. No more new cards or content after that. It was a nice game while it last.

It was a good game but CDPR was never really invested in it. Elder Scrolls Legends all over again.

so, the gwent is officially dead
congratulations CDPR. Let's just look at this amazing chain of events
cdpr creates a game a lot of people like, with amazing voiceover and art style
cdpr creates another amazing single player game with even better voiceover and art style
cdpr realises that people liked this game and takes a lot of things from it to improve the game.
cdpr puts in charge of balance complete mor... ahem, incompetent person
cdpr sees that people are not satisfied with balance but does not give a flying ♥♥♥♥
sdpr starts to add new cards, more canserous than before, powercrepting past expansion cards
cdpr still does not give a damn about balance
cdpr sees that game mode people liked is not finished and quite raw and decided to finish it. Now we have absolutely disgusting and repetitive mode. still not finished
cdpr scares away the major(i would say, but feel free to disagree) chunk of players(russians), and (once again feel free to disagree) major people who wished to pay money to buy cosmetics
cdpr for quite some time teases comunity with the secret 1-player gwent game
cdpr releases this game wiithout 0 advertisment instead of implementing the game into online client of gwent. And the game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anyway, because they decided that actually playing some CCG like slay the spire, deck of ashes or blood card is nor required to make a great CCG. Surprise, the game has 5.1 on metacritic. "we tried" © CDPR
cdpr cuts the amount of cards and championships, now we have even less traffic
cdpr officially declares that the game is dead after making balance change, most of playerbase will probably dislike
Great work, keep it up

Press F to pay respects
  • Gwent: The Witcher Card Game will not get any new content after 2023.
  • 70 more cards and a final Esports season will be part of the game’s final year.
  • A new tool called Gwentfinity will hand the reins of the card game over to fans.

Palliative care would be a better term.

Well it's time to uninstall then. I don't see the point of playing and supporting a multiplayer game which is about to die in the near future

the game won't be dead, it will go into maintenance. there will just be no further updates or card drops.

the servers will still be running.

Yeah.. I mean everyone who is involved in Gwent should have seen this coming already. Honestly I am surprised they even going at it another year, the pro scene, events, money has all been decreasing for years. Many if not most pro players already left this game quite some time ago, it was clear to anyone who knows anything about card games that their approach was not sustainable in the long run. Also, it was clear as day CDPR did not care and just left Gwent to bleed to death slowly.

Most people from the team I (used to) play in only check into the game from time to time with some new updates, discord is completely dead - not just for this team. Most of the bigger teams died out, best competitive players left.. I don't know about the general casual players but to most competitors the game was already pretty much dead and were moving on.

Sure, and I am glad because at least I can still log in every few months and maybe play some games if people are still playing. But you gotta understand that a game like this with no new cards, no real updates (with some very minimal balance changes), no competitive scene and probably barely any youtube and twitch content has not much to offer to your average player.

Everything comes to an end eventually, however its nice that instead of pulling the plug entirely they hand it over to the playerbase in terms of continued balancing.

well it's rare for a company to entirely pull the plug if they can just lat it go on auto-pilot. We can take Guild Wars for example. It was great, quite populated, a whole lot of fun and constant updates, and on regular intervals a new expansion came out. Later GW was put on auto pilot, and abandoned by the devs pretty much still is playable after all these years just nobody gives a damn and nobody plays it anymore then. It's an abandoned title by the developers. Same as Gwent will be.

Well when it comes to gwent, you probably would feel the effect of people leaving a bit later, since only 2 people are needed to play, and you will find a match for a while, unlike when you are staring at teh empty cities of a quasi mmo game

I think it is better that the game dies... pretty sad... but CDPR never got the hang out of it...
With almost every new card content new cards always were OP through the roof... i left multiple times the game and hoped they change this behaviour after time. But no chance.

The card game on itself is really fun but the lack of balance destroye always the fun.
