Though everyone always complains about Nilfgaard, but I think that's mostly because their style of play is designed to interfere with the other factions and is VERY annoying. On their own, most of their cards are underwhelming. I find I either win big or lose big when I'm matched against them.
Many Northern Realms decks depend a lot on cards that generate boosts, damage a unit every turn, or have orders. Nilfgaard's ability to disrupt all those (lock units, sieze units, place spies in between units that synergize, move units to other rows, etc) make them a tough opponent for NR.
On the other hand, if you're playing straight up attack cards (like Scoia'tel elves) then most of Nilfgaard's tricks don't do anything significant. Likewise, having cards that don't depend on row placement, synergy, or which have zeal can help counter a lot of the NG tactics.
Gwent can be a rock-paper-scissors sort of game with the factions sometimes. The trick is to have enough utility cards in your deck to allow you to adapt to your enemy's tactics. Plus, you're never going to win every game. Sometimes getting destroyed is a good way to learn new tactics.
You should go and see the recent Gwent TLG invitational tournament. That faction got a near 99.99% ban rate.
Not sure what rank you are on, but yes different ranks have different so called "metas". At the lesser ranks like 15 above, monsters seem to be dominating, so I've heard. And maybe 10 below, would be NG, I guess?
I don't think all the people who played in the Gwent Invitational series who voted for that were buffoons btw.
Though there seems to be some skepticism about the data sources and the fact that it places Nilfgaard as the second worst faction at the moment...
According to it, Skellige is still the number one faction by a significant margin over Monsters / Northern Realms, with Scoia'tel / Nilfgaard a few points back and Syndicate at the bottom of the pile.
There's nothing the matter with wanting to win. It's not like I ever play to lose. But you have to realize that the TOP pro players typically only win 55-60% of their games. If you can manage a .500 record in Gwent, then you're generally considered to be doing well.
