Yes, in this case it absolutely does. Keeping this legacy API around because Grandma doesn't want to spend $30 on a GPU made in the last 2 decades prevents them from moving forward with making the game look and run better, or from designing the zones or gameplay features they want to design. Supporting legacy ♥♥♥♥ just creates a longer and longer tail of customer support issues that reach back ages to hardware and operating systems that are no longer officially supported by those that made them. Mmm, everyone loves trying to solve bugs related to Boomer Jones' GTX 210 and the special custom drivers/viruses he keeps downloading off of google searches to keep modern games running.

A Laptop here to run GW2 starts at 2000 dollars. Many people cannot afford a new PC just to run an older game like GW2, its cheaper to just move on.

brother i have a laptop i got for the equivalent of 2000 dollars, and i live in west asia where the currency is really bad. and i got a gtx1060 with a 8th gen i7 16gb ram on it. way more than what gw2 requires for dx11. and even this build is supposed to be a really old and bad build by today standards. and thats a laptop which is more expensive than a desktop. i have seen desktops cheaper than budget smartphones and having only intel chips that support dx11.

most people are running the game on dx11 since its been the default setting for a long time. so unless you changed it to run on dx9, ti wont look any different. but with the removal of dx9, devs wont have to account for two separate dx versions for any content or updates so it'll be easier for them and they can actually try to improve performance and graphics further if they want to since now everyone will have the same version running.

Yeah bro you totally need a 3000-series nvidia GPU to play Guild Wars 2.

I think many people play "older" mmo games because their PC can handle it, as even those games advance, they will be unable to play them, unless they buy a new PC or upgrades.

What the game really needs is a new engine, or something that makes it possible to have 50 people on the same map without lagging/ removing companions because the server is unable to handle it.

This PC costs $445 USD, has no graphics card, but graphics provided by the processor are far superior than the best DX9 graphics card from the year 2012, the GeForce GTX 280.

I've been using the mod that converts DX9 to DX12 for a long time now, since it massively improved the performance. I wonder if the update to DX11 will remove the necessity of this mod or make it even better.

Also to the people complaining this will lock people out.. if you can't get a DX11 system it's time to find a job instead of playing GW2. It's actually good new that they're updating to DX11. It means the game will not be ditched any time soon, or they wouldn't bother investing into upgrading.

No, you'll have to use the in-game gem store just like always if your account is not a steam account but a anet account instead. This information is there on youtube and google everywhere.. basically. A simple search will point you to the information you need.

Just a PSA for those playing Guild Wars 2 on linux, or the ones that are considering doing so.

On linux, you will need a Vulkan capable graphics card.
You can check if your card supports Vulkan here:

Vulkan came out in 2016, so you'll need a "newer" card than 2009-2015 when DX11 came out to play Guild Wars 2. So linux requirements went up more than Windows ones.
But really, 2016 is 7 years ago at this point, buying a 5 year old card second hand shouldn't be that hard if you need a quick upgrade just to keep playing GW2.
