Returning player - Engineer build using Pistol/Shield or Rifle?

Hi guys,

Used to play at release. A lot has changed since then, just wondering if there is a viable build for Engineer using either Rifle is Pistol/Shield as main weapons rather than tools? Or is it best to look at another class?

I play Engineer/Mechanist using paired pistols as one and rifle as other for longer range damage. Pistol/Shield combo should be okay for support but I love the damage 2 pistols can do. I am using mostly ascended weapons and armor. I had a blast getting my engineer up to 80 and I have maxed out the weapon and armor crafting to make my stuff. Still working on Legendary stuff.
