Controller Support when?
It's 2024 and we still don't have controller support. Steam Deck and Rog Ally cannot enjoy this game. It's absurd!

I think most likely it wont happen

I hope one day. As you say TC, mobile is important and Anet keeps ignoring it.

If you type in "GW2 controler" and "GW2 steam deck" on YouTube, there are plenty of videos with people doing it, so I definitely think it's possible. I'm not an expert, but you might want to check out those videos, some might help

Yeah it's doable to play with controller
I would reccommend having a playstation 4> or steam controller though for UI usage

... Or a steam deck ofc

Turn on action cam, helps a lot.
It will automatically give you cursor mode when interacting with vendors and UI

But it won't feel completely like native controller support, like if you're playing ffxiv
So that's why I reccomend having a playstation controller or steam deck/steam controller for navigating the UI
Doing that on a joystick is not so enjoyable

Ask on the official forums so you get more attention from the devs. There was some work in the past to improve the controller experience, but this was eventually dropped when the studio had some big layoffs.

My partner and I have been playing on controller for like a couple thousand hours. You don't want Anet to make controller support. It would be trash. Get a Steam Input config you like and enjoy the game.

Also, remember that Anet never has and never will look at this forum. They don't even have mods here.

Why?
A UI update for controller would make the experience better, even if you continue to use your own config through steam

They would probably go the FFXIV/WoW console port add on route
Meaning that you would be able to bind it to your preference, but would have interface optimized for controller use

Playing WoW atm
Kinda makes me wish GW2 had addon support lol (except it also comes with downsides ofc)

The console port add on is just so nice
Coupled with the immersive questing interface
Feels like I'm playing a different game
I'm even using the GW2 interface addon xD

I have faith Anet will find a way (and there are a very few games that manage to read controller inputs right around Steam Input, badly breaking using it with them, or otherwise mess up Steam Input based controller mousing), but ultimately the real issue is that most people will use the "official" support even when it's bad, so asking for Anet to invest time in something that will worsen people's experience isn't productive, even if some of us have already invested in tools to work around it.

The point that they would do a bad job is just consolation, though. The fact that we should be glad they won't do it doesn't really change that they won't do it in the first place.

I think it would have happened by now if it was a priority for them
I can only see them spending resources on it if they decide to release guild wars 2 for console

They don't even need console support. Mobile gaming through Steam Deck, Rog Ally, Legion Go, and even mobile phones is the future of handheld PC gaming.

Sometimes I am too lazy to sit on my PC after spending 8 hours at work sitting on a desk typing my life away. I don't want to do that. I want to sit on my couch on front of my TV and play games.

Implementing controller support is not a major task. Hell, even if ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games like Black Desert Online or Neverwinter nights have it, so can Guild Wars 2.

They haven't bothered for over a decade. So odds seemed slim to me that they would bother now at this stage in the games lifespan.
But I admit, I didn't even consider handheld gaming. You do have a point with the increase of handheld gaming popularity for PC
It might be a new incentive for developers now to implement controller support
Would be nice indeed

Might be a little late but if you go to the controller settings when on guild wars. Click the community tab. Type rog in the search bar and yoy will find a pre made layout for guild wars 2. That's what I use to play the game on my rog
Been using gamepad for some time now. Honestly it doesn't need huge support, what we have can fill the gaps. We just need (in order of importance to me):
Full 360 joystick function, like what WoW added.
UI manipulation with Dpad (so if anything pops up we can quickly close or accept, etc)
Reward collect (i can already do this with a macro to exit Action cam, move mouse, R click)
Inventory UI (even if simple cursor lock to the grid)

Granted ideally having a full (GOOD) controller support would be nice, but I'd be happy to just get these basics added.
