Yeah it's doable to play with controller
I would reccommend having a playstation 4> or steam controller though for UI usage
... Or a steam deck ofc
Turn on action cam, helps a lot.
It will automatically give you cursor mode when interacting with vendors and UI
But it won't feel completely like native controller support, like if you're playing ffxiv
So that's why I reccomend having a playstation controller or steam deck/steam controller for navigating the UI
Doing that on a joystick is not so enjoyable
Also, remember that Anet never has and never will look at this forum. They don't even have mods here.
Why?
A UI update for controller would make the experience better, even if you continue to use your own config through steam
They would probably go the FFXIV/WoW console port add on route
Meaning that you would be able to bind it to your preference, but would have interface optimized for controller use
Kinda makes me wish GW2 had addon support lol (except it also comes with downsides ofc)
The console port add on is just so nice
Coupled with the immersive questing interface
Feels like I'm playing a different game
I'm even using the GW2 interface addon xD
The point that they would do a bad job is just consolation, though. The fact that we should be glad they won't do it doesn't really change that they won't do it in the first place.
I think it would have happened by now if it was a priority for them
I can only see them spending resources on it if they decide to release guild wars 2 for console
Sometimes I am too lazy to sit on my PC after spending 8 hours at work sitting on a desk typing my life away. I don't want to do that. I want to sit on my couch on front of my TV and play games.
Implementing controller support is not a major task. Hell, even if ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games like Black Desert Online or Neverwinter nights have it, so can Guild Wars 2.
They haven't bothered for over a decade. So odds seemed slim to me that they would bother now at this stage in the games lifespan.
But I admit, I didn't even consider handheld gaming. You do have a point with the increase of handheld gaming popularity for PC
It might be a new incentive for developers now to implement controller support
Would be nice indeed
Full 360 joystick function, like what WoW added.
UI manipulation with Dpad (so if anything pops up we can quickly close or accept, etc)
Reward collect (i can already do this with a macro to exit Action cam, move mouse, R click)
Inventory UI (even if simple cursor lock to the grid)
Granted ideally having a full (GOOD) controller support would be nice, but I'd be happy to just get these basics added.
