Level up to 80 on Steam.

If you like the game, start a new Non-Steam account.
Buy Expansion.
Use level 80 token to get a level 80 fully equipped in Exotic Gear.

You lose nothing.

The best bundle is probably the elder dragon saga complete edition as it not only contains the first 3 expansions but also the living world seasons, which are basically mini expansions inbetween the regular expansions (and which you must buy in the ingame gem shop if you ever were to buy any of the first 3 expansions individually on Steam, as it makes the bundle unavailable and the Living World is not buyable without the bundle on Steam, one of the many reasons why the standalone launcher is preferred) which is quite important if you want to experience the story in a proper order as without the living world a lot of it would be missing.

But since that would cost 50€ during a sale and you might not want to spend that much money, just buying the first 2 expansions (which are bundled together) is probably the best value for your money spent as they are basically 2 expansions for the price of one and they're also pretty good expansions. Or, as an alternative, you could just buy the newest expansion (Janthir Wilds), since that one won't be getting a major discount any time soon and wait for a sale to buy the elder dragon saga complete edition. This lets you get rid of the free2play restrictions and the story of the latest 2 expansions is mostly independent from the first 3 expansions (which are about the elder dragon saga)

Path of fire for the mounts is a must.
It is nice to play too.

Heart of thorns the for the glider.
This one is boring for me, I don't like the several layers of altitude.

Later, in several months, take End of Dragons either for the fishing or for the small jade bot that give bonuses for your characters.
I play the zone "Dragon's End" everyday.

Then don't. I recommend starting over on a standalone account to every new player using Steam (through my guide which Hefutoxin posted) if it isn't too big of a hassle, but if it is, just keep using Steam. It's fine.

since you wrote "fully commit", NOT the first two expansions bundle. I'd recommend waiting for the Match sales and getting the Elder Dragon Saga Collection Complete Edition.

If you don't want to wait for your free account restrictions to be lifted, you could buy the newest expansion, since that one won't go on sale for a while anyway, and when it does it will only be -20%. This will give you permanent raptor access and lift all account restrictions.
Then, when the sales roll around, you can get the big bundle for -50%.

You can skip the heart quests. They mainly just exist to move you around the map to discover Dynamic Events.

The Bulk of your Exp will come from Story Quests and completing the Adventure Guide.

Your level ups contain information about the Menu selections and activities you are able to do. Ignoring them to grab the reward is what is getting you stuck doing Hearts.

what? This is pointless. I have ANet version, activated f2p version on steam, and play on my original account via steam. Aint that neat?

get the elder dragon saga when its on discount , it has the best cash for content ratio
If you're going to fully commit than, as mentioned above, get the Elder Dragon Saga Collection Complete Edition when on sale. Make sure it is the "Complete" version because you'll want the Living World Seasons especially if you're following along with the story.

I've recently started to do the stories outside of the main "My Story" story and felt a little lost because I did not buy LWS2 (Living World Season 2) and had started HoT (Heart of Thorns). Wasn't sure what was going on and why someone in "My Story" now seemed to be possibly an enemy. I had picked up LWS4, but haven't done it yet, and am going to pick up LWS3 when on sale so I can continue with the story in order and not feel like I missed out on some important story elements especially with Aurene.

And your main story is the green * (asterisk) in the top right that shows up, I think, every 10 levels (10, 20, 30, etc.). If you go your Hero panel (H on keyboard I believe) you will see an asterisk on the left hand side that will show you the entire story in order and you can activate LWS and DLC's that way if you didn't click continue to next step after finishing a story.

Oh, nice.

The personal story, as it's called in the base game, is the one with the green stars, and a new chapter is unlocked every 10 levels.
Btw, you could (not saying should) change what the top right shows you through the "Content Guide" setting in the F11 panel.

But if you end up not buying the Elder Dragon Saga Complete Collection, don't buy Living World episodes from that menu. It's (20%) cheaper to buy Living World season complete packs on the gem store.
I have more in-depth info on that with picture in my guide on the PROs of a standalone Anet account…, here in Steam Guides.

Just mouse over the blue ( ℹ ) things in the Unlocks and Information columns and you'll get the same texts that you'd get in game … most are trivial but some are really good to know.
