Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2

Questions Regarding Guild Wars 2 (From someone interested in playing)
Ohai!
For a little context in the form of a tl;dr, I'm curious to learn more about Guild Wars 2 directly from others that play it in a communitive space. So I've put together a list of questions I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you guys on.
Yes, I understand that it's very easy to just tell me to load up the game and try it, and while that may end up being the case, I would really like to know more ahead of time. Especially long term, as I'm looking for another game to sink serious time into.

I'm relatively inexperienced in the MMORPG scene. Final Fantasy XIV & RuneScape are the only two I've put hundreds/thousands of hours into respectively. So please forgive me if my questions come off as a little dumb. I'll put down the question, and then for those that care, a little description as to why said thing might be important to me. Thanks for chipping in!

1.) Does Guild Wars 2 provide lots of content?
- I'm the type of person who prefers to play games for large amounts of time. I'm interested in knowing if Guild Wars 2 provides content to keep me invested long term, or if it's an experience that you're complete with relatively fast.

2.) How does progression work/fair in Guild Wars 2?
- I've heard that you reach max level blazingly quick in this game. So to piggyback off of the previous question, I'm curious to know how progression works. Is there always new sets of gear, or other challenges to earn from beyond reaching an obligatory level cap? Ability or skill trees, etc.?

3.) Are there things to grind?
- Contrary to popular opinions, I love grinding in games. As long as the activity itself is enjoyable to me. Is there any reason to fight monsters after I've reached a max level? Are there any non-combat activities that require grind in any way, etc.?

4.) What do I have access to without the expansions?
- If there's anything I don't have right now, it's a lot of money. So it would probably be some time before I could reliably afford this game's various expansions. It would be nice to know what kind of stuff, or how much I'm able to experience without them. In other words, is it better to just wait until I can afford those before investing time or not.

5.) Is PvP required at all?
- I get its appeal, but I'm not really a PvP player in most respects. If it's optional, that's ideal for my tastes.

6.) Is 'group content' forced?
- Now don't get me wrong, I understand that this is an MMO we're talking about. However, I struggle quite a bit socially, and an experience in Final Fantasy XIV caused some less than desirable personal issues. So I'm just looking to know how much of a barrier I might have to overcome.

7.) Are there things to be concerned about?
- I don't know these developers, or how the game is currently. All I can go off of is the recent review ratings on Steam.

8.) Anything else to note?
- I mean at this point there's probably other things I could ask, but if there's anything extra you'd like to toss in there, feel free! It all helps me make a more informed decision.

1. Yes. Map metas, World Bosses, Strikes, Raids, Dungeons, Story, Bounties, Jumping Puzzles, etc.

2. It starts with a vertical grind until you hit the lvl cap of 80. From there it is all horizontal progression.

3. Yes. Mastery Ranks & Legendaries. More so on the Legendaries that can and will take weeks to complete.

4. https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015898508-Guild-Wars-2-Free-Account-Features goes into detail about that.

5. Sorta. If or when you are interested in the legendary grind, WvW will be required for the Gift of Battle. WvW is a large scale PvP with 3 teams battling out for a week capping and defending territories. Recommended to find a WvW guild as WvW is guild based on teams.

6. Yes however that varies depending the project and scope. There are events in open world considered as Group Events. However, Events scale depending on the amount of players nearby. It isn't difficult to find groups either and it is always better to host a group than to look for one. Simply because most people do the same and look for groups exclusively.

7. It is best to use the off steam client over Steam client. Tends to have better deals and more regular sales. Unless you rely on Steam's regional pricing. And before you ask, no cross-save exists. Steam and Off-Steam accounts are separate. Steam accounts can only purchase expansions and gems through Steam only. Off-Steam accounts cannot buy things through Steam, but can buy from Amazon, Anet themselves, etc.

To add, Steam sometimes experiences login issues while the Off-Steam accounts never do.

PS: I wrote this entire response half asleep. If something is not clear, let me know and I will address it after some well needed rest.

To expand on 2, Instead of raising the level cap, they introduced "Mastery Levels". By spending XP earned after reaching the level cap and "Mastery Points" earned from a wide variety of achievements, you can earn Masteries, which are passive account-wide bonuses. They range from QOL like increased movement speed in towns and auto looting enemies, to entirely new features like gliding, riding mounts, or fishing. Every expansion added new masteries, so while the level/gear cap was never raised from base game's 80, the mastery level cap is over 600 now, so there are lots of uses for xp despite the level cap.

1. Yes. Far more than you think. It's significantly different from other MMOs.

2. Level 80 is the max level. Ascended equipment is the maximum level of equipment. You can get by with Exotic, which is 2nd best and fairly cheap for some sets.

With an expansion, you unlock "Mastery", which mainly unlock QoL features or Mobility options to open up more playable areas. You can choose which Mastery to work towards and switch what you are working on at any time.

Each expansion acts as an actual expansion of the gameplay. Adding to your class, mobility, and/or options for gameplay. They can be played in any order, but the earlier ones tend to have the most content for your money.

People call the game "Fashion Wars" because at the far end of the game is... cosmetics. Everyone is grinding for Cosmetics, not power.

3. Yes. There is a long list of various things you can grind for, with varying lengths to finish. Some grinds are obvious, some are more hidden and less known.

4. The level 1-80 leveling and a small amount of post 80. 27 zones filled with public events, 13 world bosses, 8 dungeons, Fractals (Tiered Dungeon system), 16 mini-dungeons (little exploration things), 8 Professions (classes), and all 5 playable races.

With how the game is set up, you can use your level 80 in a newbie area and still make progress towards something, as you get "leveled down" so your strength roughly matches the area you are in. This is important as you will likely keep revisting zones you've played through for one reason or another.

You'll find that many of the players around you are high level's who own multiple expansions, but still play in the F2P areas for things they are looking for.

5. No PvP needed.

6. Nothing like FFXIV. Public events are "group" events, but it's solo players completing the same objectives in the same area. Same thing with world bosses. If you see something big, just start swinging.

7. Buffs and Healing are done almost entirely in a small AoE around the caster, which makes all "group" content cause every player to clump together. Fantastic in the open world, where you help other solo players by just being near them, absolute garbage in instanced dungeons.

Most skills are nicely animated. This becomes closer to colorful unicorn vomit when 20+ people are attacking the same boss.

8. There is an in-game gold to premium currency converter in the game. You'll need to buy the expansions with cash, but anything else can be grinded out for in game.

1. Does Guild Wars 2 provide lots of content?
Guild Wars 2 offers a massive amount of content, far exceeding what's initially apparent. While leveling to 80 is quick, the true game begins afterward. Endgame activities include Living World seasons, expansions (with new maps, stories, and mechanics), raids, fractals, strikes, WvW PvP, guild missions, crafting, and extensive exploration. Beyond core gameplay, there's fishing, mini-games, a robust fashion system, and the Trading Post. The game offers hundreds of hours of diverse gameplay.

2. How does progression work/fair in Guild Wars 2?
Progression in Guild Wars 2 is horizontal, focusing on acquiring new skills and gear through various activities rather than solely leveling. Reaching level 80 is a milestone, not an endpoint. Gear enhances attributes, acquired through drops, crafting, and the Trading Post. Skill trees and specializations allow deep character customization. This system ensures continuous growth and discovery.

3. Are there things to grind?
While not mandatory, grinding opportunities exist for those who enjoy it. Endgame activities like world bosses, meta events, fractals, and raids offer challenging rewards. Non-combat options include fishing, the Trading Post, and collecting cosmetic items. Legendary equipment acquisition is a significant, multi-stage undertaking.

4. What do I have access to without the expansions?
The base game provides a strong foundation, including the core storyline, five races, eight professions, core maps, world bosses, meta events, crafting, PvP, and guilds. Expansions add significant content, but the base game is substantial.

5. Is PvP required at all?
PvP is entirely optional; you can focus solely on PvE.

6. Is 'group content' forced?
Group content is also optional; much of the game is solo-friendly, though raids and fractals require groups.

7. Are there things to be concerned about?
While some criticize aspects like balance and developer communication, Guild Wars 2 remains a popular MMO with a vast amount of content and a dedicated player base.

8. Anything else to note?
Guild Wars 2 is free-to-play (with expansions available for purchase), has no monthly subscription, features a unique combat system, and a visually stunning world. ArenaNet's history of annual expansions suggests a continued stream of new content.

Lots of great answeres already,
but just to drive the 1st point home again.
Guild Wars 2 is a content MONSTER!
Unlike in pretty much EVERY other MMO in the industry, "old" content stays relevant!

2.) How does progression work/fair in Guild Wars 2?

You don't level up to 80 fast at all if you're a new player and are not min-maxing boosts and the best way to level up.

If you play the game organically and do things you enjoy it might take you 40-50 hrs to reach max level.

I'm a new player and it took me 30 hrs with some XP boosts, speedrunning quests, not watching cutscenes, skipping dialogues, etc. It would've taken me 50 hrs if I didn't rush it.

I'm in Thailand and there's no regional pricing. All the expansions through Steam cost me $100.

Need regional pricing or some sort of monthly payment system, it is insane paying 100$+- for a game you may be wont playing after a few days.

If you are planning to stop playing in a few days, it may not be worth playing a game at all, because these type of games take a lot of time to finish.
A subscription wont happen, that is one of the strong sides of GW2 not having one.
Just wait for the discounts if you are unable to pay the full price.

1.) Does Guild Wars 2 provide lots of content?

Yes, tons. Even the basegame areas offer tons of content. There are quests scattered across every zone. You pick them up from locals in each area, and can complete and move on. You don't accumulate these endless quests you can't complete like I usually do in other mmos. Every area has lots of additional activities too, like finding vantage points that give you additional info on the area. The are TONS of achievement style unlocks for completing all the activities in each zone, and some of these achievements give in game benefits. Like custom colors, titles, etc.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
2.) How does progression work/fair in Guild Wars 2?

Yes, it is very easy to get to level 80. If you follow the basegame content quests in the zones you will get an entire series of EXP boosts. They usually come as a token, so you can save and keep them for later. But just blast through them. If you buy any of the expansions, you can get a token that maxes you to 80 in one second. But like many MMO's, getting to max level means practically nothing. There's tons of stuff that happens AFTER you reach 80. All of the content from the expansions requires level 80 to even start.

Once you reach 80, you can focus on upgrading your armor, weapons, and jewelry/trinkets to higher and higher categories. That will keep you busy for a long long long time. And it's possible to switch specs too on the same character, requiring different gear better suited to other stats needed for that role.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
3.) Are there things to grind?

Oh boy, yeah.

There's lots of content that is unlocked by grinding like crazy. If you get any of the expansions, the mounts are unlocked by a whole series of scavenger hunts for lack of a better term. Massive game spanning scavenger hunts. It's massive grinding with specific goals at the end.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
4.) What do I have access to without the expansions?

Without the expansions, you still have a ton of quests and zones. But, the expansions add new areas and new questlines. I actually enjoyed the quests from the new storylines, as in I liked the story, and didn't just spam click through all the cut scenes.

The expansions might not be as expensive as you think. Heart of fire and path of thorns are sold as a pair set, and they go on sale fairly routinely.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
5.) Is PvP required at all?

No, it could even be probably completely ignored. Before janthir wilds expansion, it was a way to unlock an extra mount (I am still confused if the janthir mount replaces the basegame one) Basically the mount is a hollow animated suit of armor in the shape of a catlike creature. You have to do different PVP quests to unlock 8 parts that build the mount. I did PVP just to get that.

PVP is mainly 3 sided, and if you play during the right times you can join these huge zerg style packs. Some players can take on the role of a war leader, and they show on the map as a moving icon. So you join their group and you can roll in and take over even the strongest locations. Sort of follow the leader, with combat. Apes together strong. If you run around by yourself, you will be easy meat and just die a lot. But there's still things you can do even solo in PVP to unlock the mount. I could sneak behind enemy lines and take over a single POI. Yes, I got curbstomped by two dozen other players that showed up in retaliation, but I took the POI, so I was laughing even as I died.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
6.) Is 'group content' forced?

There is some at later levels, but it's very informal drop in drop out. It probably works best in a guild or other more stable team, but then it always does. I would consider it no different then running group dungeons with pickup groups in elder scrolls online. Some groups are good, some are horrible.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
7.) Are there things to be concerned about?

The game can be an INCREDIBLE timesink. Be wary. I mean this in a great and bad way.

Originalmente postado por 🌸 WC~Tigerfrost~! 🌸:
8.) Anything else to note?

I would say this MMO is one of the most respectful of player's time out there.

There's a reason people are still playing what is now, an incredibly old mmo. A lot of MMOs from the same era as when guildwars 2 launched are now defunct & shut down or on bare minimal life support with hardly any players. Guildwars 1 and 2, were a groundbreaking change from earlier MMOs. In fact I think it started the new trend of mmos, as new developers looked at worked for guild wars and just copied a lot of it. Group event style quests with drop in/drop out. I think some newer MMO have gone too far in that they now hold the players hands continuously. GW2 is a nice balance point. Things are still hard, but help is there if you need it.

And buy path of fire/heart of thorns. Just the one dlc.

It's worth it as a new player just for the mount unlocks. They're WAY more then just movement. They're traversal mechanisms for reaching areas of the map you couldn't reach before, solving puzzles, etc. They'll allow you to complete more achievements faster and they're just a great quality of life enhancement for new players.

1:Does Guild Wars 2 provide lots of content?
Yes.It will take months to finish just the main story in the game. There are players playing on almost every map in the game and doing something. You can play many contents with these players or alone. It may take years to see the whole game.
2:It takes a short time to reach maximum level in the game. Many old players make it maximum level in a second or two when they open a new character. But let's say you open a mount with one of your characters in the game and all your characters can use it. OR you get a special item in the game, for example a legendary weapon and all your characters can use it. Apart from this, there is a separate level system in wvw. This is unlimited, but it is enough to be around lvl 1200 to open all the skills. Although these skills do not affect the power of your characters, they affect things you can use well, such as siege weapons you will use in wvw. There is also an archive system in the game. That is, there are many different types of rewards, items or even opening a certain map. Although there is a limit to this, I don't think anyone can open all of them. If what you mean is that I want to get the best items in the game and have fun in the game, and as long as this takes, it will take a month or two.
3:Grinding is something that is usually done for important items or certain mounts in the game. Some of them may take months to complete, but they do not affect your power in the game, neither in pve nor pvp. Some of them can even take years to complete. For example, getting one of the legendary trinkets in the game takes 20 days, while another can be gotten in a day or two.
4:If you haven't bought the expansions in the game, you can only see a very small part of the game and there are many limitations. The real fun is in the expansions.I advice buying everyting.Worth every penny.
5:You can play the game for years without PVP, but I'm sure you will play PVP in time. Any item in the game can be obtained either by PVP or by playing PVE. There is no such thing as older players are better in GW2 PVP. After starting the game, you can PVP with the same level and item power as a player who has been playing the game for ten years, 2 minutes later, and you definitely don't need to play.
6:You don't have to play with other players. But you will want to play because you will enjoy playing. I am sure you mean some difficult content. For example, you may not want to be excluded and encounter toxic players because you don't know the mechanics in dungeons. This is a system that works very well in GW2. Even if you want, you can't play these contents with other players if you don't know the mechanics. The game teaches you this both in the stories and in the lower levels you have entered before and in dungeons with less mechanics. For example, in fractals, you can't enter a fractal at lvl 100. You have to start from lvl 1 and everyone there will be at the same level as you. You don't have to play with other players in open worlds or even in open world pvp, but you usually want to.Helping a dying player is rewarded in the game. When you attack a world boss, you can hit them once if you want and get the same items as the one you hit the most. The system works differently. When you see a group of players somewhere, you want to go to them. When you tell them that you are new, 99.9% of them will help you. The choice is up to you, play with other players if you want or alone, but be sure that you will want to play with other players. GW2 is very different.
7:Group contents are different. In some of them you need to cooperate with other players. For example, killing the boss at 4 different gates at the same time in a city siege, but you do not have to play this in any way. It is up to you, you can earn the items you would have won there without playing at all.
7-9:%99 of players in game playing with orginal client not from steam. We gat like 15.000.000 player.Game very active.Do not foprce yourself fast lvl up.Enjoy lvling.Dont force yourself get best items fast.Lern game before.Experience in game everyting.Use wiki always.
