Level to the max level (80) and see if you actually enjoy the game. Then ask, we can give you more information at that point.
The "Complete Dragon Saga" is not everything. Secrets of the Obscure and Janthir Wilds are not included.
You can continue with your existing character.
beware, most people recommend playing gw2 with the arena net, stand alone launcher from official gw2 site, if you do that DONT buy anything on steam, you can't add dlc/expansions from steam to accounts made in anet website using their official launcher and this goes the other way around. If you decided to play with the steam version you have to buy the expansions/dlc right here on steam.
why someone would play on steam? well i know some people, kids for example who dont have access to credit or debit cards, paypal and such but they can get steam cards in convenience stores and buy products on steam.
let us know which version you chose and yes, wait for the next steam big sale, the summer sale in late June, there will also be discounts in the official site so doesn't mater which version you are playing, if steam version or the anet version, in June you will get a big discount for expansions, the cheapest one is heart of thorns + path of fire bundle, that's two expansions for just $7 it's super cheap.
That said, HoT on Proton is too hard, being about 200ms from the US by Internet: the extra lag of wine is noticable. Other releases are ok though.
As others have mentioned on steam if you buy any of the first 3 expansions (HoT, PoF, EoD) than you will be locked out from buying the "Elder dragon saga" which comes with the "Living world expansion".
I would recommend playing as free to play until you hit level 80. If you still enjoy the game and are wanting more out of it, the best thing would be to wait until the "Elder dragon saga" goes on sale for around 50$. It comes with the first 3 expansions as well as the living world season expansion.
If you get to level 80 as free to play and the expansions are NOT on sale, yet you want to upgrade from free to play, than one option would be to purchase the "Janthir wilds" expansion. If you get "Janthir wilds" you will still be able to purchase the "Elder dragon saga"
when it goes on sale and get access to that "living world" season expansion. This was the route I went with and its worked out well for me personally. Although if you are someone who is big on the story and playing in order than just wait for the "Elder dragon saga" to go on sale.
Hope this helps!
Not all are kids who play via Steam, me and my bestie do also and a few others i know, but based on asking in my guilds, friends and communities, i feel like 95% or even more are on the Arenanet's own launcher yeah.
Still, i feel Steam is nice, not just for GW2, but for many games, because Steam has good variety of payment options, yes even for us young adults, Steam Wallet is nice, can put there certain amount of money, say 50eur and then use that as a budgeted "entertainment fund" for the month, and buy some cheap games/dlc from sales etc when those happen.
Some people, even adults, ends up spending way more than they should if they just keep swiping the credit card, it does not feel the same as seeing wallet has certain amount of real currency, that goes near zero when spent and is 100% time in the UI, wallet euro value shows right next to my name up there even on this page. So it's a good tool to keep spending in a healthy adult levels.
Yes, when notices having extra gained and not bought some game lately, can buy some new game(s), and yes - if wants, can use Steam Wallet to even buy Gems (and equivalent currencies in other mmo games often) for GW2 if wants, but, as most experienced ones know, you can in game just earn gold by playing the game, convert to gems with in game official function and buy all sorts of cool cosmetics and other cash shop stuff 100% free. So after a while with a full account, can just farm gold and don't even need to spend real money on cool cosmetics and so on, just get it by in game gold conversion for free. A very nice feature for those who like no sub fee on game and also being able to get free stuff by just playing the game. ^^
So yeah, there are some benefits of Steam account playing. Still, most chooses Anet account traditionally. Good to have options to choose from.
But for now I will start with the free version and will buy stuff on discout if the game clicks
There is nothing stopping you from playing both a steam or a non steam account if you wanted, other then which version you wanted to upgrade in the future, if you choose to.

I am buying it on steam simple because all my games are on steam.
But for now I will start with the free version and will buy stuff on discout if the game clicks [/quote]
Nothing wrong with that.
Same here, can confirm. I'm playing GW2 for nearly 3 years now using Steam, works perfectly fine for me. There was only once a funny situation where expansions stopped working for everyone who uses Steam, but they fixed that quickly (and it was funny because there was a mass panic and people started going crazy 😂)
Oh, and I'm also not a kid (I wish I was though hahaha)
If you decide you want to play on Steam, the Steam summer sale starts in 3 and a half weeks, give or take a day or two, so it's definitely not too much of a wait, but as others suggested already, you should play the free version until then. You keep everything and your chracater stays exactly the same when you buy expansions, you just continue with more content after buying them :D
Smart, good way to test if the game vibes with you and you with the game. ^^
And if enjoys, then the Steam summer sales happen in a bit, and GW2 been always on big sales then.
