There is an in-game auction house called the Trading Post. However, Free to play players have it restricted due to a lot of goods in the TP being related with expansions. Buying any expansion lifts those restrictions (after 5 days of purchase as an anti-bot measure).
Even the premium currency (gems) can be bought with in-game gold to buy goodies like mount skins, armor & weapon skins, etc from the gem store. And that trade operates like real currency. The value goes up and down depending how many people trade gold for gems or trade gems for gold.
Final note: No subscription exists. Not even an optional one.
In many ways the ingame market is the most important part of this game.
You HAVE to buy the expansions to upgrade and unlock parts of the game.
Of course you just missed a major sale,
so getting the newest expansion and wait till the next in summer would be your smartest bet.
I can't buy anything right now lol, just bought a new graphic card, so if I like the game, I'll get the dlc next sale
The base game up to lvl 80 is free. You dont need to buy anything until you wanna do the dlcs. I got myself PoF and HoT and I got stuff to do for ages.
Enjoy and welcome!
Just have fun with the game for now and take a peek into Fractals, fully available content and great "money maker" for F2P too.
However if you decide to buy any expansion, the first mandatory will be the bundle Path Of Fire + Hearth of Thorn, I will not stress this enough but do not buy any other expansion if you do not have Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn
Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn will give you access to the elite specialization for your class, you can't do any other contents except the base game without them (so lets say you buy Janthir wild without having Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn, you won't be able to beat the contents there with your base spec)
Even being the oldest DLC, Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn are still today the contents the most played in the game. You got so much contents with them :
- 2 huges new regions, with a lot of maps
- A lot of Meta events
- 7 Raids
- Access to elite specialization
- Mount access
- Trading post unlocked (any DLC will unlock this)
- Able to perform in fractal t2 and higher
- Mastery system
Other DLC are just bonus contents, if you want more activity.
You like farming gold to get more contents ? Having Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn will allow you to farm gold and convert it to Gem to buy LWS 2, LWS 3, LWS 4 and IBS, those are mini expansion you can buy with real money OR you have the possibility to farm gold to get them !
Those mini xpac offer a lot of bonus contents, including one of my favorite gold farm (drizzlewood), 5 strike missions, meta events, maps...
In conclusion, play for free, you will either jump into buying your first expansion (Path of Fire + Hearth of thorn) and play guild wars 2 on a regular basis or move on to another MMO
Even out of sale the complete bundle + 2 latest expansions just go up to $150.
OP already mentioned he likes to grind for Gems, so he can buy the Living World stories with ingame gold.
On sale the first 3 expansions are about $30, getting the latest first for $25 puts you just above $50.
Literally no other MMO on the market dumps that much content on you for such a low price.
You're right. BDO dumps way more content for less and I'm pretty sure the last 2 expansions drove away almost half their player base with a slew of issues that preceded it.
I gotta admit though, their last attempt on a "raid" was certainly a slap to the face to the veterans and it was hilarious.
Thankfully I got out before hitting four digit € amounts.
And guess what GW3 will be...
And yet it is 5 times more popular than GW2 so they're obviously doing something right?
And talking about "decent MMOs", GW2 is anything but. They are STILL figuring what kind of instanced content they want to release after 13 years so I dunno what makes you think they're at least competent.
