The point can be argued back and forth and nobody's gonna be changing their minds because it can be either. Similar to the game being P2W or not... depending on how one defines it, GW2 can be P2W. If this game loses players it's gonna be from the awful performance and the lackluster content releases outside of expansions, not from a Steam thread.
As I said, very much depends on one's definition. If by P2W one defines strictly advantages that aren't available without paying then yeah, GW2 isn't P2W (gray area again due to the "F2P but expansions give you big bonuses" thing though). If one defines P2W as exchanging money for any kind of advantage, even if that comes in the form of skipping the grind then GW2 is very much so. One can start the game today and in 4-5 hours they can be level 80 in ascended gear with legendary weapons. The chances of someone doing it are slim but the ability is there. You can trade your money for in-game gold and that allows you to buy everything with 0 effort, regardless if it's a cash shop item or not.
Personally I don't consider GW2 to be P2W, although many would. Definitions when not concrete are up to everyone's interpretation and there are a lot of those in gaming.
Unfortunately people don't do their own research and assume F2P means Free and they get confused (kinda like gender swapping confused). People like that and games like Warframe will never change the model. Warframe is not a good example of F2P, because Warframe is actually Free. They use the F2P tag for legal reasons (game as service).
Guild Wars 2 is not Free.
Guild Wars 2 is Free to Play.
But to clarify :
GW2 Base Game is free (has a lot of restrictions, level 80 is the cap and game basically treats you like a bot, for anti-botting reasons)
The current full experience is buying Path of Fire (which also nets Heart of Thorns) which is almost always on 50% discount, perfect bargain for tons of content. Also the game is giving away Living World Season 2 episodes for free.
Yet the steam page only has the GW2 base game with no directions to the paid expansions or living world episodes.
To put it simply, it's Free to Play for marketing reasons, yet Buy to Play in order to get the best experience where everyone is equal.
Guild Wars 2 is the only MMO right now that does dynamic events within an open world. There is no MMO that offers this gameplay, that is why there are still players playing the game. I mainly play FF14 now, I thought that Guild Wars 2 was dead but when I went to a low level event, there were over 20 players doing it. 40+ players for end game events.
I would say it's the most expensive MMO available to date but also the best MMO available to date.
magical wheelbarrow filled with ♥♥♥♥ and your character could sit in it, it could also come with its own mastery/skills that you can use '1 would make you invincible, because no monster wants to touch that ♥♥♥♥, 2 would leave permanent skid-marks in the current zone so the mentor players could track you and help you - I wouldn't mind that, for sure
